Detained in DeLand Florida after a December Elkhart forgery case, Merle Stiles, an escapee from DeKalb county jail, faces extradition while authorities await a telegram or letter detailing the seriousness of the charges.
A leather bound volume titled Buddies gathers World War I poems collected by Campbell and Livingston from Kee amp Campbell College. The editors spent months selecting pieces and the first edition of 1000 copies is sold, with a second print expected soon.
Nicholas Meyers of Virgil died yesterday at his Virgil home after a year of failing health. Born in Aurora June 22, 1895, he married Myrtle Jones on February 15, 1917. He leaves wife, three daughters, four brothers, one sister, a half-brother and half-sister, and his mother and stepfather. Funeral from Burlington home of in laws then Vehl Catholic church in Virgil.
An all day meeting of crop leaders at DeKalb Farm Bureau discussed selecting seed corn by testing germination and disease resistance. Prof Hackleman advised culling ears for vicerows disease free weight luster and kernel traits. Demonstration plots may follow with results to be published next fall. Of 21 samples tested fourteen germinated 100 percent and several lower percentages showed storage did not affect germination.
Charles Hyde of Dixon, brother of Alderman William W. Hyde of DeKalb, had his leg removed above the knee at Dixon hospital last Monday due to spreading infection that began in a toe removed five weeks prior. Relatives reported he was much improved.
In the forthcoming April primary there are no Republican precinct committeeman contests in any county precinct. Filing petitions is required for candidates, with several precincts lacking any filings. Details list the 44 precincts and those who have filed in DeKalb, Sycamore, Sandwich and other townships, with a prompt to turn to page seven for more.
Washington reports from March 18 and 19 reveal Horace D Taft brother of the late Chief Justice William Howard Taft testified before the house judiciary committee that the former justice was converted to prohibition after the Eighteenth Amendment. He presented a letter from Taft to Yale professor Irving Fisher and argued wets seek to taint Taft as anti prohibition. The testimony references Evan geline Booth Salvation Army reports and a nationwide improvement in liquor conditions attributed to prohibition.
A Chicago and Northwestern suburban train collided with the wreckage of a mail train dragging a 4000 pound concrete pipe across the track. Engineer Carl Kutaner was killed when the express locomotive exploded. About 20 suburban passengers were injured none seriously. Within an hour thousands of motorists gathered as steam jets issued from the wrecked boilers.
Pope Pius XI led a solemn mass of expiation against Soviet Russia’s atheistic campaign drawing about 50 000 pilgrims to St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The ceremony featured Slavic responses sung in Russian and Latin prayers, with international officials and Swiss guards in attendance.
The state will start its 1930 road program with 750 miles of pave ment costing 26 to 30 million dollars. Bids for 119 miles of paving 26 miles of heavy grading and bridges will be opened April 11 as announced by H H Cleaveland director of public works. First projects cost about 5 million with more to follow after right of way acquisitions. Counties to benefit include Lake DeKalb Kane Carroll Whiteside Henry Rock Island Lee LaSalle Livingston McLean Knox Morgan Adams Pike Richland Edwards Effingham Clay Fayette Marion Madison St Clair Macoupin Saline and Cook.
County office candidates seeking the April 8 primary spoke at DeKalb County Service Men's League at city hall. Most candidates or reps attended, presenting five minute platforms. The league later decided not to endorse candidates, citing late formation. over 100 veterans attended a successful meeting.
The Senate lobby committee heard that Claudius Huston chairman of the Republican National Committee deposited 14000 with Blythe and Bonner NY brokers to cover the margin on 700 shares later sold for 520 profit. The holdings included 300 Loose Wiles Biscuit 200 National Cash Register and 200 Kelvinator shares listed under W. E. Moore.
London reports Italy rejects retreat from demands for parity with France on naval armament citing Washington conference 1922 equality. Observers see two paths: a four power treaty excluding Italy or a three power pact excluding both Italy and France.
On Starr Island Miami officials and the wealthy Circle meet at Joseph Adams home to demand Capone stay away. The Committee of 100 calls for removing undesirables and warns Sheriff Lehman to arrest Capone on sight if he appears.
Weather report notes mostly fair conditions tonight and Thursday with unsettled trends in the north. Temperature rises tonight in the extreme southwest portion while north and central areas turn colder Thursday with bitterly cold nights.
Mrs. Kate Lindstrom, 79, of Sycamore, died Tuesday night at her daughter Mrs. L. E. Cooper’s home. She had lived with her daughter fifteen years and previously farmed north of Sycamore. Funeral Friday at 2:30 pm from Salem Lutheran Church Sycamore. burial Elmwood Cemetery. Survived by two sons Edwin and Albert, one daughter, seven grandchildren. Husband Mr. Lindstrom died about twenty years ago.
Mrs. Pearlson, 1881 birth, daughter of James and Mary Burt, longtime Chicago resident, died after a recent operation at Norwegian American hospital. Funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 PM from 323 West Roosevelt Street and the Methodist church, burial in Fairview cemetery. She was active in Rebekah lodge No. 113 and the Lady Lincoln Auxiliary.
The Chronicle reports that station WILL, the University of Illinois station, is located just below station WENR or its twin WLS, and not near WIBO. WILL will broadcast the state high school basketball tournament games tomorrow night as Waterman faces Beardstown, prompting many readers to tune in.
Lord Arthur Balfour, the Grand Old Man of English politics, died peacefully at Wishers Hill House age 81 after a gastric chill. He served nearly 50 years in public life including the 1902 premiership and wartime roles, with a memorable 1917 mission to the United States and the 1922 Washington naval conference.
