An unemployment relief idea proposes a block cooperative in DeKalb to hire men for snow removal and other winter tasks. Each residence would pay weekly dues to fund employment, with blocks potentially splitting to cover more houses and ensure steady earnings for workers.
Two cars from outside DeKalb collided yesterday afternoon at 4:00 at the Second and Prospect streets intersection. No injuries were reported. Arthur Challand of Hinckley drove south on Second Street. Harry Brayton of rural route No. 2 DeKalb drove west on Prospect Street. Estimated damage was 310.
Youths and families flocked to DeKalb as Santa Claus arrived with reindeer and gifts. He spent hours meeting children, delivering candy, posing for photos, and granting wishes along Locust Street and in the business district, leaving pockets full of letters and promises to be good.
On Christmas Eve in Oak Ridge cemetery Springfield Negroes will sing carols atop Lincoln’s hill as a thanks offering for freedom from slavery. Custodian H W Fay announced the event, noting it is the first time Christmas carols will be sung at Lincoln’s grave after dusk.
An audience filled the Fargo theatre as seventh and eighth graders from McMurry Glidden Ellwood and Haish schools presented a Christmas song fest. Miss Maude Nicholson directed the program featuring chorus and solo selections with an organ intro by Maureen Bradley and solos by Billy Phillips Loren Brooke Floyd Lundgren and Walter Matekaitis. The program closed with a boys chorus and instrumental accompaniment by Billy Leutbecker on bassoon and the grade school orchestra led by Ed Chenette.
DeKalb Kiwanis members are notified of a regular Monday noon meeting at the Cottage Cupboard. Special business will be discussed and efforts will be made to speed transactions for an early adjournment. Members are urged to attend.
Carleton Carey Fisher was released today by order of the State's Attorney Castle. It is unclear if he must return for a court hearing. He was brought from LaBalle Thursday on charges of non support stemming from unpaid alimony, filed by his ex wife. One of the fastest rain showers ever measured occurred May 1 1908 at Porto Bello Isthmus of Panama with 2.47 inches in three minutes.
The forecast predicts generally fair conditions tonight and tomorrow with snow in the northern portion. A noted change in temperature and precipitation is expected as the system moves through the area.

The drought relief bill, a $45 million measure excluding a food clause, was adopted after lengthy debate, and the House moved to clear remaining routine supply bills before adjournment with various budget items pending in the Senate.
In Chicago a gas explosion lifted a one story brick building roof, killing Jerome Israelson aged five and Homer aged four, injuring their mother Dora Israelson who was rescued by neighbor Jacob Krausek. The father Irving collapsed on learning of the tragedy. Neighbors escaped in night clothes as the fire destroyed all but the walls and caused shattered windows. The blast may have originated from gas between the ceiling and roof, with damage estimated at 15000 dollars. The bodies of the two children were recovered.
Lon Smith's meat market fed eight men who slept at the city jail last night. Police provided coffee while the market furnished sausages for the men.
Word arrived of Edgar N. Steuben former DeKalb resident dying of a heart attack at his Beaumont California home. He was 56 and had served on the DeKalb police force under Chief Ruby Dick Peterson. He leaves a wife a son two brothers Clinton and Arthur and three sisters Ruth Weinlund Gertrude Kremer and Helen Churchill all in California.
The Dramatic Club at State Teachers College selects the cast for The New Poor a modern three act farce to be staged late February after Christmas holidays rehearsals run through vacation. Cast includes Amos Wellby Clyde Aurand Connie Wellby Kaye Goodyear Alice Wellby Dolores Walatka Betty Wellby Ruth Bullis Grand Duke Herbert Wiltberger Count Ivan Joe Ridolph Prince Vadimir William Connor Princess Irina Margaret Marshall Miller Coteridge Harold Carpenter Mrs Wellby Evelyn Haese Mary Mandeley Mary Anderson Kirk O Farrell Edward Barrow Connor directs the production as club head. Van Wilder Johnson and Edwin Baldwin will be home for Christmas from the University of Illinois.
Illinois November industrial activity shows mixed results with overall employment down across industries. Manufacturing leads declines with 3.1 percent fewer workers and 7.3 percent lower payrolls, while printing and paper goods rise on holiday orders. Nonmanufacturing sectors gain slightly in employment but fall in hours and payrolls.

Thompson seeks reelection as mayor during the 1933 world’s fair, facing six of his own party factions uniting against him. A harmony candidate is to be chosen by the group, with possible opposition from a Snow Brundage Deneen backed ticket and Independent Charles V Barrett. Illinois Republican council and Gov Emmerson aides attend, while Emmerson’s supporters deny official representation. The harmony bloc plans another session Monday to pick a shared candidate.
Confusion over the recall date for the October grand jury. Judge Fulton ordered the grand jury to report January 7 1931 at Sycamore after it had been set for January 5. A light circuit court session is planned for December 26 with routine matters. post indictment trials or juries may follow.
Firemen were called to East Roosevelt Street about 5:00 PM when a chimney fire caused a scare. They stayed briefly to ensure there was no lasting danger after the chimney burned out and smoke cleared.
A new work crew will be sent Monday morning to Hopkins Park to cut trees for fuel. Robert Powell, supervising, rotates crews each Monday and Thursday, with about 25 men per crew. Tony Roach phoned the police offering to feed the men at noon, and prepared the meals delivered by officers.
Mrs. Andrew Eckstrom of 1103 East Lincoln Highway died at Glidden Memorial hospital last night after a stroke paraly sis. She was 64, resided in DeKalb 44 years, and leaves husband, two children, and siblings in Illinois and Sweden. Funeral services Monday at First Lutheran Church with burial in Fairview.
Christmas trees placed outdoors for public viewing reappear with many neighborhoods, led by Park Avenue John Street and West Lincoln Highway. The State Teachers College tree is decorated in white lights and white decorations, attracting visitors each evening.
Hollywood, Dec. 20 Senate has been in session almost a month and yesterday passed the very bills Hoover suggested in the first hour. A foreign reader would think the president is elected to provide a senator someone to call horse thief. The writer believes six more months like this would reelect Hoover by acclamation.
Chicago December report: Frank Nitti cousin and right hand of Al Capone pleads guilty in federal court to evading income tax on 842 887 81 from liquor and gambling revenues for 1925 26 27. Judge Woodward imposes 18 months in prison and a 10000 fine. Nitti faces concurrent sentences and is described as Capone’s enforcer while other Capone associates previously convicted.
In heavy fog off Lesso Island the Finnish steamer Oberon sank within three minutes after a collision with the Arcturus. Fifteen passengers and ten crew were missing. four passengers and 32 crew were saved. Six Danish hydroplanes joined rescue efforts as ships from Gothenburg reported arrivals at the scene. The Oberon carried 19 passengers and 42 crew according to its captain, with some British passengers feared lost. Other vessels aided, including the Sven skund, and rescue crews battled poor visibility to account for the missing.
