Washington reports show Democratic hostility toward President Hoover grows as they attack his emergency relief plan. Senator Wagner appeals for a permanent unemployment measure, criticizing bread line relief and urging earlier action to fund road and public works.
H. B. Fargo of Geneva and Sycamore, a prominent property owner, will soon depart for Florida for an indefinite rest. He arranged affairs in Geneva and visited Sycamore as he prepares to leave. Fargo owns the Fargo theatre building and also owns a theater, hotel, and garage in Sycamore.
Emil Kading and Bob Marten survived with Captain E A J Burke missing and presumed dead after their Laird river ordeal. They were found by Wasson and Joe Walsh in an improvised camp about 40 miles from Wolfe Lake. Burke died of exposure after wandering ice and snow for six weeks while the others tried to signal rescuers.
DeKalb Avenue to Kishwaukee Creek storm drain work planned with bids opening Monday next week. Contract for drain tile expected that day and construction to start soon after. city to supervise, employing unemployed workers for ditch work. Sanitary district to lay a sewer connection via same trench under an agreed arrangement.

Chicago police hold Mrs. Martha Walrath after finding her husband Elmer Walrath, 64, shot to death at home. She claimed he committed suicide, but officers doubt the account and pursue a murder theory. Evidence includes a revolver and an apple on the table.
Eleven days remain before Christmas as DeKalb shops showcase gilt merchandise across practical, beautiful, ornamental and artistic items. Merchants emphasize timely pricing to fit present conditions and encourage early purchases for gifts.
New York December 11. State Bank Superintendent Joseph A. Broderick took possession of the Bank of United States after heavy withdrawals from 13 branches in New York City and Brooklyn. The bank held $202,972,000 in deposits with 59 branches, and directors announced it prudent to halt operations to protect depositors while seeking a speedy reorganization. Clearing houses planned loans against net depositor claims up to 50 percent to aid the bank’s reopening.
Lon Smith a well known DeKalb merchant was reported much improved after a week of illness thought to be appendicitis. He remains at his College Avenue home though able to be about the house today for the first time since falling ill. His recovery appears rapid.
Special To DeKalb Chronicle reports Beverly Hills observers note Judge Lindsey supports free love while Bishop Manning insists on the usual clergy fee for ceremonies. The writer laments that church civil universal laws and customs seem ignored as everyone pursues their own way. The piece comments on a national “Smart Aleck” phase and urges reflection.
City stores will stay open each evening from Monday next week through Christmas Day to aid shoppers. An earlier Chronicle note about December 17 was incorrect. Merchants plan festive decor and entertainments, aiming to bring Santa Claus and his reindeer to DeKalb before Christmas.

Fire Chief McEvoy announced that the local fire company sold 401 tickets to a benefit picture shown at the Fargo theater last week. The firemen’s share goes into the city pension fund, a strictly local matter. They praised public cooperation with the fund drive.
Infant son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Montgomery of Esmond died early last evening after birth yesterday at Glidden Memorial Hospital. Friends express deep sympathy to the bereaved couple on their loss.

A Lombard Pontiac sedan owned by LaVilla Johnessee of 63 North Edson Avenue burned on the Lincoln Highway about seven miles east of the city around 3 30 this morning. State Officer O N Larson reported to the scene. rear was a ruin and no occupants were found. A passing motorist is believed to have taken the passengers, the car leaving the road into a ditch before the fire.
