County Visiting Committee Report Defiance Aug 27 02

The board of county visitors met at the Children's home and found the institution well managed with 33 inmates, 11 indentured, two deaths, and per capita cost $65.75. They recommended improvements to bathrooms, water supply, hydrant access, front yard landscaping, and a new female department. Several notes mention staff and other local events and people.

Ed R. Mallett and his daughter Sadie arrived home this morning after a summer visit in Norfolk county England. They sailed July 26 and landed during coronation week in London spending eleven days with relatives and meeting the king and queen. They returned on the City of Paris now the Philadelphia docking in New York September 13 and visited Albion New York and Orleans County Fair. Mallett gained twelve pounds on the trip and reports better conditions for laborers and farmers.
