Across multiple states Republicans gain ground while Goebel allies face defeat in Kentucky. In New York and New Jersey Republicans secure sizeable majorities, with Erie and Chemung counties swinging Republican. Weather fair, votes high, militia briefly mobilized but no major disruptions reported.
Anxious portrayal of childbirth fears is followed by a pitch for Mother's Friend by Bradfield Regulator Co. The ad claims the product eases morning sickness and other issues, urging women to mail names and addresses to Atlanta for information.
Lincoln reports on November 8 indicate fusion gains with Republicans losing across precincts. If trend continues, Holcomb and fusion ticket may win by at least 10,000. Baltimore results show Democratic lead with Smith forecast for large statewide majority and likely Democratic control of the state senate.
Philadelphia on November 8 reports Republicans carry the state by 70 000 to 140 000 votes down 30 000 to 40 000 from 1897. Elected ticket includes State Treasurer James E Barnett Supreme Court Judges J Hay Brown S Leslie Mestrezat Superior Court Judge John O Mitchell. Two supreme court vacancies fill one judge per party.
Topeka reports very meagre returns with conservative politicians predicting a Republican gain of about 10 percent. A light statewide vote was polled. In 1896 Fusionists carried 60 of 105 counties, last year Republicans won 81 of 105 counties.
Aberdeen South Dakota November 8 returns coming in slowly with partial reports from nearly every county east of the Missouri river indicating Republican gains. Judge Fuller, targeted by Fusion forces, trails but not enough to defeat him. Indications point to a Republican majority of at least 500.
Boston reports from 381 towns including Boston give Crane 154,721 and Paine 97,696. In 1898 Walcott led Dem Bruce 174,845 to 100,701. The shifts indicate a Republican loss of 22 percent and a Democratic loss of 4 percent, placing the Republicans ahead by about 65,000 in the state.
Jackson Mississippi November 8 Returns indicate a very light vote in the statewide election. The Democratic state ticket is elected by about 30,000 votes. The Populist vote shows a decline. A Populist likely wins a state legislature seat from Choctaw County.
Richmond Virginia on November 8 reported overwhelmingly Democratic results. In the tight Isle of Wight Southampton and Nansemond senatorial district the independent candidate won. Overall turnout was light.
Des Moines Iowa returns from half the state show Republicans up 5,004, about 14 per precinct. If the ratio holds, Shaw would gain roughly 60,000 votes, with chairman Weaver predicting Shaw’s victory by about 65,000.
A brief note from the Indianapolis Journal praising progress in the sense of touch among the blind. Gotrox claims personal skill with practice, saying he can detect a borrower two blocks away.
Early returns show Republicans gaining across Ohio with Franklin county and Hamilton areas tilting Republican, while Nash leads in several counties. Jones drew strong Democratic support in Cincinnati and Cleveland suburbs, leaving race results mixed as Toledo and Columbus show sustained Republican strength.
The report details a large Republican advantage with Nash and the entire state ticket favored. Estimates place Nash’s plurality 20,000 to 40,000, possibly over 50,000, against Jones, with total votes under 900,000. City returns note Nash’s home serenade and speeches by Harry M. Daugherty.
Toledo mayor stresses a large nonpartisan vote as a triumph for liberty and a milestone in Ohio political history. He predicts the Mineral plan will guide the legislature to pass a municipal code commission bill that removes party control, electing officers by nonpartisan methods in all cities, and mentions a Christian policy toward the Philippines.
An arch at a new vegetable cellar in Boonville Missouri collapsed injuring and killing several people. Officer Charles W Kaiser Ezra Mullen of Pittsburg Kas and W Ledgerwood were crushed. Superintendent L D Drake survived injuries though crushed. The 50 by 20 foot arch had just been built.
In Liberty Missouri on November 8 fifteen or more masked Regulators entered the Arthur hotel and dragged out John B. Robinson in night clothes to the cemetery where they whipped him over alleged disrepute of the hotel. A separate item from New York reports a proposed 209 million dollar Trusts union to consolidate rubber bicycle and automobile firms into one giant producer.
In Hattiesburg Mississippi on November 8 John F Bennett chief of police was shot and killed by I N Hollingsworth a traveling salesman. The tragedy stirred wild excitement and the murderer was hurried to Meridian to prevent a lynching mob. The quarrel began from a business transaction.
A Richmond schoolteacher in Chicago writes to Dr. Hartman praising Pe-ru-na as a blessing and a reliable aid for female complaints. Other Wisconsin readers claim Pe-ru-na cured their pelvic irregularities during menopause and relapse, urging women to seek the free women’s book from Columbus.
Philadelphia reports J C Brill Car Company engaging in mass building of double deck trolley cars for General Traction Company of Paris to operate central city tramways to the exposition grounds in 1990. Export share exceeds 40 percent. orders include 150 trolley cars for Lisbon. Other foreign orders reform for cities in Italy, France and England. Also notes American advance at Manila with General Wheaton landing near San Fabian and MacArthur moving toward Tarlac while Lawton resumes advance amid trenches and blockaded rivers.
President McKinley returns to Washington as Canton suffers a devastating fire on October 5 claiming fifty lives. In Ashtabula Ohio engineer C A Carpenter is fatally struck by a train. Akron oil dealer Alfred Griffin dies after taking laudanum in a saloon.
In Lexington Kentucky a group said to be from the Republican headquarters tried to disrupt a vote count. Armed men fired about 100 shots after clashing with police and citizens. One Black man was wounded but not seriously. No arrests reported. In San Francisco Democratic James B Phelan is conceded as mayor by a 3000 vote margin.
Chicago market report shows cattle values from good to fancy 4 50 to 5 25 per cwt with various weights. Hogs range from heavy packers at 3 75 to 4 10 and prime to 4 50. Sheep and lambs list good to prime prices around 4 75 to 5 00 for lambs. Also notes Pittsburg and other regional price levels for calves bulls and cows. no clear day or date specified.
Cattle grades range from fat to stockers with calves at 7 25 to 7 50. Hogs priced around 4 00 to 5 00 for various weights. Sheep lambs and cows seen with best lambs at 10 to 12 and other grades 2 50 to 5 60. Grains show wheat No 2 red 74 to 70 cents and corn No 2 mixed 60 to 144 cents. Bulk meats 5 25 to 6 25. Butter 24 -- eggs 21 to 22 cents.
