The Late Council and a Tightfisted Legacy

The Crescent News recalls the outgoing Democratic council's last year in office. It notes paying $500 extra legal fee to Solicitor Farrell and leaving about $2,000 in attorney fees for the incoming council to cover. It cites work in cases started by Democratic officials and highlights Judge F L Hay's high workload yet low pay. The departing council faced a $12,000 floating debt but left $26,000 in the treasury, nearly $9,000 in working funds, and did not leave floating indebtedness. It praises the outgoing council as one of the city’s best for years and requests mention of Flanagan in the Tuesday issue.

Record of Council as to Litigation

The old council did not hire extra counsel during Hay’s term, and no outside attorney fees were created by new actions. Bills paid covered prior contracts with Hubbard and Harris & Cameron for bond and water company cases, plus a five year service contract from a former council. The old council claimed efforts to prevent litigation and protect city interests, resolving several cases and lowering costs. It urged Crescent News to stop its slurs against a valued council.
