Visit to Jefferson Davis Home Described in Ohio Letter
Mrs. Jacob Adams of Highland township writes from Ocean Springs Mississippi about a winter southern visit. She recounts a 15 mile drive to the Davis home near Biloxi with Mr Moats, noting toll bridges, coastal scenery, and a foggy day. The Davis mansion, now a soldiers home run by the state, is described as decayed grandeur, with eightyseven acres and twenty eight inmates. The letter contrasts it with Dayton’s soldiers home, praising the courteous veterans and a cedar gavil from the plantation.
