Albert W. King, born June 11 1849 in Defiance, built a long career from dry goods to groceries and clothing. A Civil War veteran of the 100th O W I, he saved a woman from the Mississippi on the Sultana disaster and later led A W King & Son in Defiance with Edward G. King as junior partner.

S F Shelley had cause Thursday evening to say some vain things but he kept his temper. He attended the Vocke Vandenbroek wedding at Napoleon Thursday and after nearly finishing his toilet found his dress coat left at home and then took the first train to Defiance.
Joseph Tuttle of Waterville Washington argues in favor of county saloon licenses set at $1000 saying the high fee will deter new applications and force watering of liquor to harmless levels. He suggests the measure could gain Prohibition party support.
Tip Travis reports discovering what he calls the San Jose scale on his orchard trees. He sent samples to the Wooster experimental station for confirmation and urges township trustees to study control methods to prevent widespread destruction of orchards.
John Wisda, former Defiance county treasurer, seeks his son Frank Wisda missing since September 1900. About 21 years old, six feet tall, slender, exemplary habits, straight gait. He once worked as a local paper reporter and may have sought newspaper work elsewhere. Father considers moving to Oklahoma and wishes to take Frank with him.

Mrs Grace Bethards East aged about 28, wife of Lima banker Charles East and daughter of Rev J H Bethards and Mrs Bethards, died Sunday at St Vincent's hospital Toledo after a long illness. She had been brought to Toledo for an operation and will be buried in Lima after viewing at L S Churchill home in Toledo. Rev Bethards, former pastor of St Pauls M E church, is now a supervising elder in Defiance district.
President Farmer of the Infirmary Directors association spoke at Columbus meeting against township trustees distributing outdoor relief. He argued the infirmary director should handle such work and opposed abolishing the office or empowering commissioners. He called county infirmary boards a useless expense.
A letter to the Defiance Herald questions the cost of public printing and advocates halting foreign language editions to save funds for local road building. It cites tax figures for county auditor and urges petitioning the legislature to repeal foreign printing laws. The horse ran into a train caboose, bolted across Washington street trestle, was caught after about an hour.
