Monroe doctrine debate ties Philippines to US policy
The In Journal states the Monroe doctrine does not bar US expansion in the eastern hemisphere and that the Philippines acquisition does not weaken that doctrine. It argues the pledge was to avoid interference in European wars, not to forbid territorial gains, and that US war with Spain was to end a nearby conflict.

Sir William H. Preece argues against free trade in a London address, calling it a damaging error. He cites America Germany and Britain as examples of lower prices and superior demand knowledge driving foreign market gains, while noting Britain's commercial decline and Democratic calls for renewed protection.
