Henry County Grand Jury Indicts Bridge Firms in Anti-Trust Case

Twenty seven indictments accuse nine bridge companies and nine agents in Ohio of violating the Valentine anti trust act. The Grand Jury, after viewing a secret trade agreement, says bridges were priced exorbitantly. U S Steel and officials linked to the trust face indirect involvement. An ex commissioner was seen eavesdropping as the probe intensified.

Fire at Island Park destroys caretaker cottage

A defective fire led to the burning of Harton’s cottage at Island Park on Monday about eleven. No hydrant near East Defiance prevented firefighting. the flames consumed the building and damaged the park chutes. Loss totals several hundred dollars for cottage and furniture.

Gas Could Have Killed Domestic Worker In Home Incident

Miss Bertha Bunz, a domestic at J I Deatrick on Jefferson Street, nearly asphyxiated when a gas stove was left on overnight. The gas had been turned low and extinguished while still on, leaving Bunz unconscious in her room until a physician revived her. She recovered with Sunday and Monday medical care.

Air guns prohibited warn boys on city streets

A Christmas day parade of youths with air guns led to warnings about a state law banning firing such weapons in cities. The rule carries a heavy penalty and boys are advised to avoid being seen with air guns in public to prevent trouble.

Mrs Phelps' Sister Dead In Omaha

Mrs WR Baker a sister of Mrs E R Phelps of this city died Saturday at her Omaha home. Born Sarah P Richardson she was the daughter of a pioneer DeFiance family and taught in local public schools. Survived by four sons and two daughters she was about 65. Eldest son in Alaska was en route home when telegram arrived.

Purchase of Old Kuhn Factory by F W Cheney

F W Cheney bought the old Kuhn factory complex in Connecticut, including one brick and two frame buildings. He has leased them for years as his lumber business grows, with the brick building to host a planing mill. Andrew Greaser holds the frame building contract for immediate repairs. The brick factory will also be repaired, and the grounds span the east side of Perry street to the canal between First and Second streets, excluding the Record building. After closing, the Defiance Box company used the wheelbarrow plant in the building.

Porch Burial in Riverside Cemetery

Austin Porch of Findlay a former Defiance resident was buried in Riverside cemetery after a Friday arrival. About twenty five K of P members met the body. J C Porch and Jos Marsh with the Findlay lodge attended. Services followed KP ritual. Porch worked at Defiance Machine Works for seventeen years before 1886. He was married to May Marcellus. she and a daughter died earlier. A second wife lives in California. Death blamed on spinal trouble from an injury at work.

Oldest Defiance Woman Rosina Brown Dies at 97

Mrs. Rosina Brown aged 97 a long time Defiance resident and widow of Earnhardt Brown died on December 20 at her daughter’s home on Deatrick street. She came from Germany about fifty years ago and lived in Defiance county twenty four years with sixteen in the city. Surviving are four children ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Funeral at St. John’s Catholic church with Rev. J P Gloden and Rev. Forst of Antwerp officiating. burial in Riverside cemetery.

Injured Farmer Hurt in Runaway Accident Near Arthur

George Seidel of a farm near Arthur sustained a gash over his right eye requiring nine stitches when his wagon jolted against a bus along Perry street while three teams traveled abreast. He was taken to Maplewood hospital and rests well. the horses were uninjured.
