I learn from the Toledo bet of last sitar Day that the Spring election is rapidly approaching and the Democrat s Are getting re to give an old time majority. That is very important if True and As this is a democratic c to any one would be willing to concede probably that something was radically wrong if the Olty did not give a democratic majority. The Hee correspondent says the town has been growing very rapidly and that some expenditures in Tho suburbs have called out complaints from the opposition. Its likes me now that i come to think about it that some of the Ablest bodied kickers against sundry Little occurrences to at have come to pass in this Cly have heretofore been numbered with the elect that is they have always voted the democratic ticket at Nal Ionni state and local elections with out questioning the Wisdom of electing this or that Man accepting the word of the party manager As to the qualification of candidates to fill 417?for Sale lot is in Holgate a addition i a thou Len the Wintter North Defiance. I Here is another filing. It is the custom of the Council when in in Lier a is needed. To instruct sonic member to buy it now Why not let All such contracts to the lowest h drier. The City uses a Groat Deal of lumber and would it not be a great saving to the City in the course of the be. R of All the mater i it used was bought in that Way the Man who is vested with ant Hortto to buy May not hum All Oyer the country to got the highest nor yet the lowest priced lumber but there is one thing certain that 1 while he is out he is going to drive a few 1 stakes that will be of use to him in Tho next Campaign no matter How Little Benefit tile City May derive from his Valan be services. If a new Era of Reform was to open up it would appear absolutely Hooch i sary that such practices Stop. Peter Biglor and Christ Delhi members of the Council it is alleged contracted without any i authority Aal for a Large a nonet of Hose at top round prices. This occurred at u time when Tho Council was under fire and hence the order was countermanded and some time later notices were published asking for bids for u certain amount of Hose considering Tho record of Tho Council in All its parts it Woald hardly lie considered a reflection to suppose that if it had riot Boon under fire it would most certainly have endorsed the action of Bigler and Diehl for they would hardly have been so presume ious if there had not Beau a precedent. Interest what is particularly notice by eat this period is the fact hat this class of voters which by the Way More than holds the balance of Power in the party is d posed to drop the Bosses in the coup and choose men to minister the a Frahs of the City because they Are capable and not because of their political affiliations. Aguin there is a younger class of democrats who have got tired of being rounded up two or three times a be r by men who have no use for them Only to secure their votes. Of course the attitude of these two classes and their growing disposition to diverge from the straight and narrow path marked Down for them to follow is alarming to those who have been used to nothing but obedience. Melchior associate c. H. Melchior principal. Quot a a a steel solid Fence the local democratic politic ii machine in Defiance has always been accounted a m vet. The perfect working of whee s within wheels is striking marvelous wonderful and hardly less harmonious in their relation to each other than the Moon and stars to the Sun. Two or three men control a Ward and they in turn Are subject to the will of one Man. His mind is the silent loom that weaves the Woof and Warp of his followers into a web distinctly his own. He is the silent spinner that has been sending out cords that Leash men More effectively Han chains of steel. It was his band that made the connection Between the municipality and the machine and verged them into one. The defeat of we. Carter for cd y solicitor was the first intimation that there might be a wheel with some broken cogs in it and since that Day the working of wheels within wheels has not been p articular by striking marvelous or wonderful. Now luckily for Defiance she has escaped the Affine Ion that has visited Many towns in Northern Ohio namely the great North american Boom. By that i mean her realty has not been forced up to five or six times what it was Worth and then allowed to drop Down to nothing when the gamblers had tired of the play. Her growth if not rapid has been substantial. The industries with in her Borders have been prosperous and every Day has added something to the value of property. Prices have not bounded up like a balloon but have come up in such a Way and stand at such a height that any Man with Ordinary business sagacity ought to be Able to determine with out the least trouble in the world that the causes that have led to this advancement Are perfectly legitimate. Considering then the question in this Light and looking Forward to the future it will occur to those who have the greatest interests at stake that the time has come when the Sand pipe attachment of the political machine that has been drawing out the life blood so to speak of the municipality should be lopped off and the town left free to developed into a far greater and much More prosperous City than it is . If once rid of the barnacles that have made All other interests secondary to their own and the affairs of Defiance pieced in the hands of men who have a proper Conception of what would come out of Wise and economical measures she will that much sooner stand As the Queen City of the Northwest another Brilliant example of Tho councils Way of doing business was the manner in which they turned Hopkins an i Washington streets Over to be gutted by the county commissioners. The members did not even take the precaution of insuring the City against possible loss and consequence when the i commissioners had rendered both Borough fares about impassable and utterly refuse to do any thing towards re storing them the Council had to step in and in to expenditures that it would not have been called upon to make if it had not been forgetful of Tho interest of the people. The Republican and express exposure of the it ghastly outrage forced the commissioners to take some action looking to Tho restoration of Hopkins Street. A couple of Hundred doll irs Here and a couple of Hundred there May not amount to much but taken in the aggregate they make a big thing. What a Yeity needs that is flt noted in that Way is to get rid of off Sci As who bring such things upon the people. Or and mrs. D. The property abutting on Clinton and some other streets in this City that have been paved were assessed $2 per foot for that purpose. These streets so paved Are the Only ones we have Worth speaking about the s Reet fund is now Over drawn nearly $2,000. About $1,500 were expended on fifth Between Clinton Street Aud the Wabash depot but it done to look now like there had Ever been a Pound of gravel put on it. There is a feeling among a majority of the taxpayers if a Street is to be improved the property abutting it should be assessed for that purpose. Such improvement enhances the value of property along the thoroughfare but does no Benefit the Man located a mile or two away. I speak of this because i learn that the Cornic i con templates improving third Between and Wayne streets at the expense of All the tax yers in the City instead of allowing the abutting property to pay for it. Tile Spring Medicine. The popularity which hoods Sonia Parylla has gained As a Spring Medicine is wonderful. It possesses just those elements of , blood purify lug and appetite restoring Onieh everybody rooms to need at his reason. Do not cont nue Ina Dull tired. Factory condition when you he to much benefited by hoods her a Prill a. It purities Tho blood and makes the weak Strong. The Bee correspondent says there is to be a democratic Victory Here this Spring and that the opposition is making some complaint about the improvements in the suburbs. That refers i suppose to the Preston run Bridge. Thut is nothing but Astean a miserable outlandish steal. There is not enough Money in the Treasury to pay for it and it is not yet completed. That Bridge is some of the fruit of the silent loom that i have heretofore mentioned. I would say in conclusion that the present Council is getting into pretty deep water and if it keeps up its present Pace it will be in a Good Deal deeper before the year is out i think the situation would justify a supreme Effort on the part of the people regardless of party to Over throw the men who now control and Are seeking to retain their Power in this City. There is danger ahead and if the people do not Wake up they will be the suffer Era Noble crossing. A Qualti a Buzzard Friday and saturday of last week. Give name of this Pap. The destiny of a town rests in a great measure in the hands of the common Council and in speaking of the possibilities of the future it might not be impolitic to take a look backwards and see if there have not been some that Souid be guarded against Here after. What the people want is a careful expenditure of All funds paid into the City Treasury. But is that always done let us take an example it has been the custom in Defiance to build All sewers out of a common fund. The prop erty abutting the sewer is not assessed alone to build it but All of the Tux payers con tar. Bate their mite to that end. Hence it is held that it would be wrong and unfair to change the present plan. Granted but then what course does the Council pursue to secure the Best possible material at the lowest rates when the 3 Wilhelm Street sewer was first considered a Resolution was passed by the Council to build it when there was Money in the sewer fund. Now what was the result despite the Resolution of the Council the sewer committee commenced work. Not with standing the work was to Cost something like $3000, the committee did not think it necessary to let the contract of furnishing the material to the West bidder but gave it to a Man who was deserving Soj Weihing of his party. Now who was it that d ire disregard the positive injunction of the Council regarding the time that the a sewer should be put in who would dare do such a thing but the min whose mind is the silent loom that is weaving the Woof and Warp of the Council into a web distinctly his own he knew there was no Money in the Treasury to pay for the work la the Job was the Cord As it were that bound another captive to his Chariot wheel a persons troubled with rheumatism should read the following from mrs. A m. Peters of Easu Des Moines Iowa. She says a i had suffered with rheumatism the greater part of the time for nearly seven years. At times i was almost helpless.
