It produced a splendid impression and while we Here reproduce the sure in cold Type to spread before the people As a Mode Al thanksgiving Sermon yet to have appreciate it fully one should have heard it delivered in All i s livery of Locut on Defiance o., nov. 27th, 1890. Thanksgiving. Col. 3,15. be thankful. We Are met on this our National thanksgiving Dav i Trust for the express purpose of rendering to our god the supreme gratitude of our hearts for the mercies and blessings which he has conferred upon us during the past year. Some of us have had afflictions and trials and possibly some reverses in business but after All if we Stop and count our mercies they by far outnumbered our afflictions trials and reverse it is no doubt of great Avau age to us As a people that we have this Dav set apart by our National authorities As a Day of thanksgiving. It affords an Opportunity Tor of and step aside from the Bush cares of life and recount he kindnesses of our go i. It is of advantage of us because such a custom cannot help but remind us of the fact that there is something in life Worth living for. The work of life is worthy our Best thought and Endeavor. The apostle in this chapter and text is calling upon the Collos ians to put on the Christian graces and abound in them with thankan Ness or thanksgiving. So i think i b la my for us to put on these Christian graces of love cd Rory and forgive Ness and abound in thankfulness to god for t e Many blessings have that we enjoyed during Tiep St year. In fact there Are so Many reasons Why we should be a thankful people that it is not a question As to How we shall prove it to be our duty but As to what reasons will mos forcibly Impre a us with our duty of thankfulness and thanksgiving to god. The scrip ures abound with reasons for thanksgiving. Inde d they teach us that it is our duty to give Tai aus for everything. This of course not Only warrants us in giving thanks to cod for spiritual things but also for temporal things As Well for of those we Are ail the constant recipients. But i am sure that we As a people and As a nation have great reasons for thankfulness in both these respects. Indeed i think we might with propriety adopt the language of the psalmist and Sty that a the has not dealt so with any other in fact the whole Pelim from which i made the foregoing quotation is an ascription of Praise to go i for personal and National i blessings. And it certainly a con la a the fac that god makes a distinct Ion Between individuals comm unities and nations in the bes Owra ent of h s blessings. There is no f i Csc More be in than the t we differ in our gifts Ani by songs As individuals and what is tine of us As individuals is also True of the nations of the world. Therefore it is certainly v by important that we recognize the f act that personal and National by slings come from the lord and Are Given to us in recognition of personal and National Fidelity to his divine government hence we conclude that just in proportion As we As individuals and As a nation prove True to the principles of his divine government we will receive his bearing. Now in the presentation of this subject i wish to Call attention to some of the National bushings which at this time Call for our gratitude and thanks and i think that the character of our population ast a nation should be a source of National gratitude. Indeed i c not see How it could be otherwise than a source of or it to Ude to us when we consider that while our population is made up of the different nationalities of the Earth the t they Are in the main so thoroughly Amer can Zed. Those who have come tour have not been the offs on rings of their nations on a by principally virtuous vigorous and enterprising men and a cml a. It is True however that in Many instances Thev have come to us with their Peculiar id As which in so a cases h ave Ben to the Prince Ples of our government then Thev Ynve come to us with their be zip motives Butl do not wonder at a his for i believe that Sells be Genera by underlies the desk re of pm Gration. At Las it has been so in the aves of the past and i doubt not is so now and will continue to be so in the Ages to Rome. Some one has said and it is True a that the hebrews emigrated to Egypt not with a View to Egypt a Good Bot for Corn. A then the spaniards went to Mexico and South America not so much for the purpose of cultivating Mexico and 8oufh America As for the purpose of getting Gold in fart All of the in rugs its to at. I can think of in the history of the world that did not emigrate for selfish to Ives were the few puritans who landed on a Barren Rock in mid Winter who came it is said a for god and conscience Baka Quot some pro pie re Premie in a great National d angers from the Ste do increase of emigration to our shores. I am willing to admit that there is apparent danger when we see them coming in such vast numbers with their an agonists ideas and selfish motives. But please do not be alarmed until you Stop and consider the great transforming Power of this american nation. I think that it has been clearly demonstrated that sometimes Init he second and most certainly in the third generation the foreigners who come to us Ara no Longes foreigners no longer German Irish nor scotch but have become american citizen. This is demo str Ted i flunk by the fact that in Many places where German and French the Chere and preachers were employee i a few years ago not for the purpose of assisting the people in acquiring those languages but because they had no intelligent understanding of any Oto it or the people demanded he English in their Stead. In fact in Many places where a few years ago there were flourishing German churches they h be dwindled Down to Small mis sons or else they have introduced English services with a View to holding their Young people there May be and doubtless Are so be exceptions but the exceptions occur where there is a constant influx of foreigners for Only in Ruch places Are their churches kept up As exclusively German or other foreign speaking congregations. I know of two denominations that sixty or seventy yers ago were almost entirely grm a that Are now Almose entirely English. I have not Tim to dwell upon the transforming Power of our nation at any great length in this discourse. But that it h is this Power no Well informed i person will attempt to gainsay or deny. Toe roman Catholic Priesthood Are coming to recognize it in Sud a was As to express alarm. They seem to see in the future his Ory of the rom n Atholl Church of America a time when they cannot control As they do at to is time. T by see in he future history of the roman c Tho is who com to americ it a probable a lege Fier by for their children of at in St the third if not of the second general on become nol Only steadfast americ is but also protestants and very prop Bly protestant Chr sri a. Hence we have the opposition of a Quot least the More Radi Tai elements of the roman clergy to All our free ins buttons. For hey very Well know that a child e l be Ted in our Public schools comes Nuder american influences and the Reform in most cases b tomes a protestant. But with All the opposition we have from this and Osh it r sources we will stand by our free ins rations. We will stand by our country for in our country and through our coup Rye a efforts and i s free institutions is the Hope of the education and Sav Trion of the world. I d due the roman Catho be laity and a few of the clergy to s v that the sen intents As expressed in thir recent meetings in Baltimore and elsewhere indicates that at least american catholicism is becoming pretty thoroughly permeated with american ideas and sentiments. The time is not in my judgment tar in the future when t in c Colic Church of America and most of her clergy will unite most heartily with the protestant churches of americ it in bringing about some of the most needed reforms in our nation. May the god of nations Basten the Day when All Christian bodies irrespective of denominational distinctions shall be a unit in questions of moral Reform. I also think that our present National peace and Prosperity should be a source of personal and National gratitude. While it May be said that Here and there in oar land there la some suffering from one cause and another yet it May be said the Bloom of health is upon our National Cheek. Then we Are at peace with other a ions which unfortunately cannot be a d of ail the nations at this time and yet there is no very serious complication existing anywhere at least not so serious but what Good statesmanship and Christian love and Charity such As we think exists in America could Settle in a very Short time. All nations however have not As yet sheathed their swords nor Bea in them into ploughshares nor Chat need their Spears into planning Hooks. But i cannot speak of those nations at this time. Their Condi tio land difficulties Are More or less familiar to the readers of the daily press. But however sad we May feel at the unfortunate compile tons troubling other nations it is a matter Cal id for our gratitude that our government stands secure our Laws Are in the main enforced and peace reigns throughout our Borders. A Public sentiment controls. Public conscience is enthroned and it is certain that there is an invest by Omni Ponn Power controlling the in Fleet the passions and the will of the american and then perhaps As never before in the history of the world and Cert Only never before in the history of this nation has god so graciously smiled upon All Branchi of Industry As in the past decade. The Husbandmen especially with the possible exc Pion of two years of to e decade have never enjoyed More Bonn Tinl crops than within the time mentioned. And the last year has been a year for which his City and Vicini y Are under Many obligations to Render to go thanksgiving and Praise. Aking the county of r some of our crops for he last year have not quite measured up to the average but others have gone far beyond the average so that upon the whole we have enjoyed a most prosperous year. Or. Is thought that the grand total of our products for the last year will reach nearly four thousand million of dollars. It is True that these figures Are Well nigh incomprehensible Bat when you think of them do you wonder the a i come to Yon on this our National thanksgiving Day and say in the language of holy write a be be but it seems to me that we have another reason for Hanks riving when we consider the moral and intellectual condition of our nation. Our nation is truly a Christian nation. I know that Yon will say that infidels deny this. Very Well suppose they do. They deny Many other things which Are equally or to rep Ain than this and their denying them does not change their truthfulness nor does it in this Case. All that is Neces Ary for us to do is to look at the facts in the Case and these prove that we Are a Christian n Tion. For instance consider that our population is now nearly sixty four millions and As near As i can ascertain we have bouts Venty for thousand churches under our americ in Flag which Are Worth Over four Hondr d million dollars we spend every Yar Over eighty millions for churches. Then we have in America Over thirty million sitting in our churches which some one said Alto deducting the children who Are too Young to at end the suck and the infirm we have Church room for our entire population or this is True it is unfortunate that we have not a More wis distribution of it. But it will no be Long until the Enterprise of the Peoples Sis de by a he Church Extension societies of on churches will have located a Church wherever there is people to attend it. Then Here about seventy three thous and minis1 ors of the gospel. Compare these figures with the number of lawyers something Over forty five thous and the number of physicians?1rix?Ty thous it in or More and Vou get some Fant idea of h moral condition of our nation. Then to give von some idea of our Intel la Cotua condition and advancement i would ask Yon to consider that the re Are in America Over one Hundred and eighty thousand school school teachers and we have Over one Hundred and thirty thous my Public schools supported at an Anual Cost of More than one Hundred million dollars. Ponder these approximated St Ristics and you get some idea of he average intelligence of on american citizenship. But in addition to this i wish you to remember that we have something Over eight thousand news papers that Cost the people of the United St ties about sixty millions of dollars per year. What a grand comment upon the average intelligence of the americ in pm Ople no such things can be said of any other nation Nuder heaven. No such a list of facts and figures concerning churches ministers lawyers physicians school teachers newspapers and Public schools which Are the glory of on american Republic can be found on the Earth. May god preserve them to us and the generations to come Tor they stand h re by the Church of the living god and All moral Reform. And it seems to me that we could do nothing to Day that would be More acceptable to god than to resolve to still maintain our opposition to infidelity and strengthen our position toward our institutions and transmit on Prino Ples to posterity. There is now and eve r has been a great Many theories among men As to the secret of our Power and Success As a nation. Some of our statesmen have been vain enough to ascribe it to statesmanship but it in not there for there is nothing in states Craft of itself competent to bring about such results As we have realized and to preserve us As we have been preserved. I affirm that our government would have gone to pieces Long ago if it had not been for other influences than statesmanship. For there Are not Many statesmen of whom it can he said As of some of the fathers a they have the fear of god before their but others will Tell us that the secret of oar Power and influence is in our culture and average intelligence. But they have not found it yet cultured and intelligent a ions have crumbled and fell because of their corruption. No my friends the strength of our american nation is in on holy christianity. And it seems to me that i can see in its Onward March assisted by on Public schools and other institutions which it originated an influence which will ultimately culminate in such Power As to cause sin and iniquity in its various forms to hide its Brazen face forever. Yes it seems to me that i can see in the Onward March of Christian Power and Light the dethroning of the Demon of intemperance which la perhaps the darkest spot upon our american civilization. And i think that it should be a Canso of thankfulness to Day that god put it into the minds and hearts of the people of All creeds of All the slates of on Union to Thunder into the ears of their legislators their desire to have the use of rum restricted or prohibited. And this sentiment will continue to grow until the manufacture and Sale of alcohol As a beverage will cease and the open Saloon the foe of god and Man will be numbered among the t Tings of the past and to bring this about each of us have a part. And the time is Here when it takes More than the expression of Mere sentiment to do on duty in relation to this great question. It is our duty to create sentiment. But still another reason for thankfulness May be found in the unifying influence of our christianity. Never before in ail the history of the world have the churches been so United in their efforts to save men As now. Indeed so great has its influence become in this regard that not Only churches but states and i May say nations have come to feel that we Are All Brethren bound together by the Bonds of love and the Unity of one common christianity. Never before has the True spirit of christianity so thoroughly permeated the world As now. If the people of any part of the country is afflicted they receive the sympathy and support of the rest. If the South is Scourge i with Dise be we look Over All the differences of the past and Send the physicians and nurses. If their cities Are burned we Send them food and Money. If the Prairies of the a St or the forests of the North Are swept by he devouring flames we rend by telegraphic Speed the news of help and then bring into requisition on grand Rai Road system and Forward at the rate of a mile a minute food clothes and Money. If a Johnstown disaster is reported in the morning papers the purse strings of the nation Are loosed and the wants of the needy Are met this cannot be said of Pagan or anti Christian nations. Such deeds Are Only written upon the pages of the history of nations whose a god is the lord a and whose religion binds them to a tiler in one common brotherhood. May the lord Grant and May we live and work and give in each a manner As to cause this christianity to continue to reach out its a <11 of love till All the nations of the world shall have Felt its saving Power and have been cemented together by its unifying influences. I do not expect a unifying of All the nations of the Earth on n tonal questions but Brethren i do expect the a King of Kings and lord of lords a who has in Sheath d bus sword of truth and right anon the Earth to continue his warfare against sin and iniquity until every nation in the world so Iii have come to be a Christ an nation until War i shall cease until the be Ting thru i s tall be silent and the Roar of he Cannon shall be hushed and the sword of War shall be forever sheathed. Yes i believe for god 8 is so that the time w la come when All those Nat one which have been cemented together by the unifying Power of this common christianity will come Forth from their Graves by the resurrecting Power of this King of Kings and lord of lords and met it somewhere in his vast dominions to Celera e a Day of Ever Las ing Praise and thanksgiving. Will we All be there god Grant it the Servic s closed by the song of a a american by the , a collection for the Benefice of the poor of the City a old Hundred a the repetition of he lords prayer by the vast Aud ence and he Benediction pronounced by presiding elder lease. Ring Amor can nation like All distinctly Amer thanksgiving Day is a credit to the can holidays such As fourth of july and d Cor i Ion Dav it is becoming More each year a n Tural h bit increasing in piety and interest. The hundreds of thousand of splendid sermons preached All Over on land on that Day the thousands of prayers offered Mach of nil of which is re pro due d by our secular As Well As religions press is Dong much to More fully and d reply christianize and knit together the common brotherhoo 1 of the nation.
