He neck broken and in 13 1-4 minutes declared and said to have made another history of the crime for which he was hanged. Special to the Republican express. Columbus april 12.?at 32 094 of clock this morning Chas Hart answered for the murder of Elsie and Ashby Good on the Gallows. He was dead in 131 minutes after the drop fell. Hart slept Well wednesday night and thursday morning ate his breakfast with much relish. At 9 of clock chaplain Winget conducted religious services in the Annex and at 11 of clock baptized the Young murderer. During the morning he made a statement to the chaplain but Rev. Winget would not say who he charged with complicity in the murder. It is thought however that it confirmed the confession made to detectives Brown and Klein in the jail at Paulding. The rope with which Hart was hanged was tested thursday morning with a 300 Pound weight. It stood the test Well and was made into a noose. When the time came for Hart to take the death cell he weakened and Shook As though he had Tho ague As he climbed the stairs. He bid the other inmates of the Annex Good Bye with a shake of the hand but did not utter a single word. The men All responded with much feeling gift one and that was Jones who has had so Many new trials. When Hart was brought onto the Gallows he was weak and trembling and had to be supported by Warden James while the straps were being adjusted. No stimulants had been Given the boy and his eol laps was attributed to the effects of religious frenzy. After the straps were adjusted chaplain Winget made a Long prayer which sounded very much like an exhortation. Hart interrupted frequently by exclaiming a ooh lord a a ooh save me a a ooh lord help me a ending with a Good Bye to when the trigger was finally touched and Harts body shot through the trap there was not a struggle from his tightly bound limbs. His neck was broken by the fall and he probably never Felt the pain of the tightening rope As the Slack brought his body to an abrupt Stop in its descent toward the Stone floor. It is not Likely indeed that Hart suffered to any great extent even in spirit during the last few moments prior to the opening of the trap door through which he plunged to punishment. Before chaplain Winget commenced his prayer Warden James gave Hart the Opportunity to make a Public statement and for first time following his arrest denied his guilt saying a i am not guilty of this charge but i Hope the lord will be with it is thought by some that he did not intend to use the word a not a but meant to say that he was guilty. He was so badly frightened that he probably did not know what he was saying. Before ascending the scaffold Hart directed that his remains be sent to his father in Orison ind. Immediately after the execution the Corpse was taken to the prison dead House by three convict pall bearers called the a dead House gang a in making this confession to Rev. Winget Hart declared that the Story he told the authorities while in jail was untrue so far As the statement that there was no one else implicated in the murder with him was concerned. He did not Endeavor to declare himself innocent but asserted that others were guilty with him. The chaplain will not make the confession Public until he has communicated with the authorities of Paulding county in reference to apprehending those whom Hart sought to Criminate in this last confession. Warden James is holding the remains until he shall hear from Harts relatives. Bodies were found in the Woods about one Hundred Yards Distant from the Hart residence. The remains of the unfortunate innocents Lay beside a log with their clothing and some pieces of Wood piled Over them and which had been burning but it is supposed that the fire was cutout by the rain that fell on sunday afternoon. The boys head was badly bruised and an awful Gash was in his Throat. His stomach was almost Cut to pieces and his external organs had been removed. The girls head was almost severed from the body. Her stomach was ripped open and examination proved that she has been out raged. The toy gun with which the boy was playing was used As a weapon by the murderer but most of the fiends horrible work was done with a knife. Charles Hart was suspected of knowing something about the crime and was placed under arrest at once Levi Cain who lived in the Vicinity and Harts brother in Law Clarence Brindle were also arrested and placed in jail with Hart. That night As an indignant populace threatening to Lynch the prisoners they were removed to Van Wert jail. There they remained until november 22, on which Day they were taken Back to Paulding and Given a preliminary hearing. Brindle and Cain were discharged and Hart held without bail to the grand jury. Two Days after the hearing he confessed to sheriff Staley of Paulding county that he had murdered the Good children Brindle he said assisting him to cover up the crime As a matter of precaution sheriff Staley on november 24, removed Hart to the Williams county jail at Bryan Ohio. On nov. 26 a venire for a special grand jury to investigate the tragedy was issued and a few Days later the grand jury thus chosen returned True Bills against Hart for the murder of Elsie and Ashby Good. A change of venue to Defiance county was asked for and granted in behalf of the state and to prevent any attempt to Lynch Hart. Wednesday dec 20, at Defiance Hart was arraigned before judge Snook on a charge of murder in the first degree. He plead guilty to the indictment and the attorney made an eloquent plea to the court for mercy for his client. After the Coroner and sheriff of Paulding county and several other witnesses had testified to the guilt of the prisoner judge Snook sentenced Hart to be banged april 12. As soon As a commitment order could be made out Hart was removed to the state Penitentiary and confined in the Annex until summoned to the Gallows to expiate his crime. Harts terrible crime. I =pb5_ltftkrdrs Ktuk prs a i two innocent children the victims of the Young desperado. The crime for which Hart was hanged was the murder of Elsie Good Agee 6, and Ashby Good aged to the child Ren of Samuel Good who resided in Crane township Paulding county a bout four Miles from the town o Paulding. Hart lived with his parents not far from the Good Homestead. The two children disappeared on the afternoon of sunday november not coming Home at Nightfall search was made for them and the next i morning about nine of clock their dead there was said to have been an important meeting of Bondsmen in the office of John a. Deindoerfer one a the past week in which it is stated the ways and Means of making Good the shortages of w. O Barney and l. Conkle sex county treasurers was the principal topic of conversation. Prosecutor James b. Wood has commenced two suits in court against l. Conkle. It is alleged in the petitions that or. Conkle has appropriated to his own use nearly $7,000 above what was due him under the Law. There is no question but what a conference was held in Deindoerfer a office and if the objects of the meeting Are correctly reported it has probably been conceded that it is aground hog Case All around and that the Cash must be forthcoming before the suit comes to trial. For Many Days following the filing of the report of inspector Vordtriede or. Conkle assisted by D Webster of the evening news and Democrat was engaged in going Over the records but up to this Date they have not reported their findings. Possibly they found something they were not looking for. Vordtriede in his report found or. Conkle Short something Over $5,000 and now prosecutor Woods brings suit to recover nearly $7,000. This would indicate that a new mares nest had been stumbled onto since Vordtriede had left town. No matter however what the occasion of the conference in Deindoerfer a office the Outlook is extremely favourable for the tax payers to recover every cent due from those democratic officials who were afflicted with the a a shorts when they retired to private life. Or. Webster who is using the columns of the evening news under the Guise of c. B Headley a name to vilify the editor of this paper because of the a a gang rottenness the paper has exposed is one of the chief advisers of or. Conkle and has it in his Power to make some important statements regarding the shortages charged against Barney and Conkle. He was the auditor of Paulding county for Many years and As he has made a careful examination of the books during Barneys and Conkley a administrations he is in a position to deny or affirm the charges embodied a the petition prepared by prosecutor Woods. The news is posing now As the Moses of a regenerated a a gang and one of its owners who is in Possession of knowledge of such importance to the tax payers should not assume the role of a dodger. He should not Only give the facts regarding the conference in Deindoerfer a office but should also state whether it is True or not that if Conkle does disgorge that some of the sex a doors of the county will have to Bear a share of the shortage. When it was pointed out to sex auditor Hill that the records showed that he was Short $1,600, he hoisted that to was ignorant of the act but very promptly covered the amount Back into the Treasury. When the same records show that or. Conkle is Short nearly $7,000 he not Only prepares to fight it but is aided by or. Webster who is supposed to be running a great moral Organ in the interest of the tax payers. Aud could with proper management be forced to give him Relief. That have been gleaned from daily Republican express. The a county steal. The amount still climbing up in Putnam county the Ottawa Gazette has the following to say regarding affairs in Putnam county a the More the robberies of which Putnam county was made the victim Are investigated the More enormous and shameful they become. In the researches made by Ati Orneys for the commissioners in the Case against o w. Crawfiss Bondsmen it was discovered that instead of the people Osing $29,000, they have lost at least $42,000. And it is thought that by going Over Ever piece of record thoroughly the sum would swell to $50,000. This is astounding and shows How helpless the tax payers were and How bold and remorseless were the crimes perpetrated. In All probability they will never know just How much they did lose. Not Only have persons paid taxes they should not have paid but May have paid and never received full credit. The muddle can never be fully straightened and More a the it will be noted in the above that there is a difference in counties. In Putnam county several democratic officials have been sent to the Penitentiary because of their speculations and the officials Are still keeping up the search that they May correctly measure the steal. In Defiance county there does not appear to be any Law that can reach democratic officials that have wronged the tax payers. The matter is hushed up in some Way and the democratic press attempts to Blacken the character of the agents that have made the exposure. Anc still the news and Democrat though interested in covering up such mat ters Are constantly charging the Republican express with injuring the town. If anything has injured Deal Ance it has been the robbery of the people by the democratic a a gang Anc the failure of democratic officials to prosecute the offenders. The people Only demand that Justice be done and they cannot be blamed for looking with suspicion upon the factions Anc press that covers up official robbery a special dispatch from Paulding i reads As follows the grand jury which has been in be Sion Here since and including monday of this week made its report tuesday and the Well known democratic Leader m. N. Utley of Cecil this county is among the indicted. He is charged in the indictment with forgery and prosecuting attorney Corbett feels confident of making a Case against him. Utley will be remembered As the clerk pro tem and treasurer of the school Board a Cecil recently found Short $223 by examiner Mccalla under the direction of state school commissioner Corson which sum it is alleged was secured on forged warrants. It is extremely unfortunate for or. Utley that he did not reside in Defiance county. There does not appear to be any Law in this county under which Lawless officials can be indicted and consequently though some of the most startling exposures Are made no indictments Are Ever returned. Furthermore if he had resided Here he could have depended upon the support of the nows and Democrat in his affliction and every Effort possible taking the past history of like cases As a criteria would have been made to condone or cover up his alleged crime. It was or. Utley a misfortune that he was not a member of the democratic a a gang in Defiance county. If he had been the chances Are that he would not be under indictment for forgery. Or. Deindoerfer today that the conference of Bondsmen held in his office recently was for the purpose of perfecting a plan to save a treasurer w. O. Barney Bis Little Arm in Milford township. The flan for raising the funds will be by subscription and a list is now being circulated in the West end of the county. Wesley o. Barney left an Eden when he came Down to this City to take Kaige of the county Treasury but before he left he was offered up As a sacrifice on the the alter of a heart Ess democratic a a gang that robbed the county through Barney and left him a financial and almost mental wreck. If or. Barney and his friends had made a truthful statement of his affairs when first overtaken Fey disaster the godless Crew that robbed Bim would have been forced to have made Good every cent that had been taken from the county through him and his farm would thus have been saved to him and his Bondsmen would not have suffered. But no his Mouth was sealed and the democratic a a gang that accomplished Bis downfall was allowed to slip out through the a masterly inactivity of the prosecuting attorney and Barney was branded a scape Goat and turned Loose on the commons like a worn out horse. The looting of the county Treasury through or. Barney was one of the most dastardly outrages Ever perpetrated upon a Community but the news and Democrat never once protested against it. The news and Democrat have been the defenders of the men who left Barney in a Hole and while his friends tramp Over this county trying to save his birth right the looters laugh in their sleeves and the news and Democrat will try to draw attention away from the affair by railing against the the men who Are most inter ested in saving or. Barney his farm Are his neighors and life Long friends. If they will look around them they will note the fact that the men who caused him to Loose it Are still on Earth children cry for pitchers Castoria. The recent reference of this paper to the $50,000 Bond robbery in this City by a democratic Council has been a source of much to raiment to the evening news and Democrat and they have Ever since been trying in some manner to fix the blame on judge Hay. We have taken occasion to Point out several times the motives that prompted the owners of thenew3 and Democrat in their villainous by untruthful personal assaults upon the editor of this paper. Through their efforts to make the democratic party of Defiance county the principal of every infamy perpetrated by the democratic a a gang in this City they have practically lost about All of the official patronage of the county and As they say in the a tramp world a have been reduced to their uppers. When judge Hay was a candidate against against h. G. Baker in 1893, the news and Democrat attempted in every Way possible to wreck Bis character. They even sought to break him Down by attempting to Parade him As a partner of Andy Sauer who held the news and the Democrat As the most obedient of his slaves the londoners of his sins and the defenders of the savings Bank in its robbery of the widows orphans and Farmers of this county. All these questions were met in that Campaign and disapprove and or. Hay elected despite the villainous methods employed to defeat him. But that is not All exercising a right that has been vested him by Law judge Hay has been giving a part of his printing to the county record instead of the Democrat and that is the reason Why the knife of the Assassin is again pointed at Bis character. The $50, in City Bonds were Cive to b. C. Faurot because some member of the Council was to receive 10,000 out of the steal. F. L. Hay has proven True to every Trust imposed in him by the people. He is honest truthful and his Public record is unavailable. He did not commend the personal assault upon the editor of this paper there were no grounds for the statement that there was any Rumor of that kind. It was a pure fabrication born of the owners of the news and Democrat who have been As people Daft since the exposure of a a gang corruption in this and neighbouring counties. Have the gentlemen on the Alley a Skeleton haunted closet that they fear will turn itself inside out and open up a new season of sorrow for them ? a democratic Council presented Faurot with $50,000, minus $10,000, which was held Back by Home member of the Council.
