Veteran Hose Company demands city pay after disbandment

The Veteran Hose Co. No. 1, organized January 1872, has served fire calls since, including a third ward blaze where rival company left apparatus. After January 25 1881 they were the only active company and now seek pay for ruined clothes and service to property owners. They were discharged without notice and will not disband, asserting city costs claimed are three to four thousand dollars yearly while they received only 450 dollars from 1881 to 1883. They thank citizens for past favors and advertise Argand base burners by Switzer Bros.

Four Lantz Flemming brothers charged with murder in Defiance after fatal street assault

A late night brawl outside the Crosby House saloon ends in the death of Snyder, known as crook neck, after Frank and Sam Lantz Jeff and Cat Flemming beat and kicked him. Police arrest all four. indicted for murder in the second degree. Snyder leaves a wife and two children.
