Defiance chatter runs hot over a murder case as town events spill across the week. Local rail and water works plans, theatre chatter, and market tips fill pages while visitors and visitors’ reports mingle with church notes and a growing fund drive for a soldiers monument.
Grace Episcopal church ladies host a social at the parsonage tomorrow evening the 23rd. Supper served from 6 to 10 p m. Mr and Mrs May invite all friends to attend and be welcomed.
The residence of Mrs. Miller on Garfield Avenue caught fire last Saturday morning from a roof spark. The alarm sounded, but firefighters arrived after the blaze was already out. Only minor damage occurred, with a hole burned in the roof.

A group of wealthy Defiance residents backs a new project to establish embroidery and fine lace production. Swiss-trained Bentz, now in town, seeks about $4,000 capital to launch the venture. backers say the industry is rapidly growing and highly profitable, urging support to encourage the enterprise.
The home of the bride’s parents in Bowling Green hosts the marriage of Charles L. Deatrick, son of the city’s mayor, to Miss Grace T. Harring, formerly of the city and daughter of Wade Harring, road master of the T. and I. railroad. Guests wish the couple a happy life together with room arrangements noted for now with Mrs. R. P. Osborn on Jackson Street.
The Veteran Hose Co. No. 1, organized January 1872, has served fire calls since, including a third ward blaze where rival company left apparatus. After January 25 1881 they were the only active company and now seek pay for ruined clothes and service to property owners. They were discharged without notice and will not disband, asserting city costs claimed are three to four thousand dollars yearly while they received only 450 dollars from 1881 to 1883. They thank citizens for past favors and advertise Argand base burners by Switzer Bros.
A late night brawl outside the Crosby House saloon ends in the death of Snyder, known as crook neck, after Frank and Sam Lantz Jeff and Cat Flemming beat and kicked him. Police arrest all four. indicted for murder in the second degree. Snyder leaves a wife and two children.
From Our Own Correspondent Alass reports Brunersburg is without a school yet as Diphtheria rises. Miss Ella Koons is held by the County Treasurer. A new fence adds to Squire Bennet’s home. John Hilton returns from the West. Rev Bowers preached at Georgetown. Brunersburg’s winter teacher was to be C C Biglow but declined after college. Local social remarks contrast courtesy and respect with a County Farm Superintendent incident.
City council met in called session to consider fire department, streets and bridges. Report on fire department discharged driver and team, adopted. Proposals for a volunteer department adopted. Farmers are urged to bring all picked apples to Carroll and Co where they will be paid the highest cash price. A new line of choice goods and chamber sets has just arrived at Carroll and Co for customers to view and purchase.
