Courage of Sisk and Boy Save at Old Springs Well
On a Saturday a crowd gathered at Old Springs as Lancey fell into a fifty foot well. J Francis and others lowered a rope. Silk descended to help. Silk and Lancey were pulled up but Silk and the boy later sank. Silk urged the helper to release him and both resurfaced after a long struggle. Silk, exhausted, was saved for the pair to reach the top. The boy was unharmed. Silk collapsed in a unconscious state from the strain. The Sarnia Observer reports a daring rescue and the heroism of Dallas Silk.

Books as bridges over dark morasses to knowledge
A reflection on libraries as guarded by an enchanter of books in paper and leather, where countless volumes wait to be found. The piece argues a charitable act to pick true works, like Dr Johnson and Emerson urged, as sources carrying us to wisdom and best information.

New Charity aids needy by fostering self reliance in Philadelphia
A Philadelphia group called The New Charity operates for two years promoting self help over handouts. About a thousand philanthropic ladies visit districts to learn need, relieve distress, and encourage earning a living through honest work, reducing outdoor poor appropriations by thousands. In Macon County Georgia, near Big Creek Church, a flat stone on four pillars known as The Indian House inspires relics and fortifications, likened to English Druidical stones.

The Life of a Train Conductor An Easy Quiet Image
The article weighs the conductor’s status against his burdens. It notes the outward ease of wearing authority from start to finish of a trip, yet reveals the daily pressures, endless questions from passengers, and the mixed patience required. It ends by highlighting the bright, humorous side when trips run smoothly.
