Forger J W Carnahan Arrested in Mansfield Case

Fremont marshal and Officer Hausmer captured J W Carnahan a noted forger after a tip led to a sighting with two companions. He posed as a traveling salesman for the Ohio Oil Co and allegedly obtained $50 from Jerome King with a fraudulent draft while in Mansfield. Carnahan recently visited his mother and attempted suicide by taking narcotics. a physician kept him under care until recovery.

Death of General Samuel Beatty Veteran officer dies after apoplexy near Massillon

General Samuel Beatty, longtime Civil War volunteer, dies at his Massillon area farm residence after apoplexy. He served as First Lieutenant in the Mexican War’s Third Ohio Regiment, became the first Colonel of the Nineteenth Ohio, and rose to Major General for his conduct at Nashville. Beatty also served Stark County as Sheriff from 1857 to 1861 and resided in Jackson Township for fifty six years.
