The Republican State Convention of 1887 will meet in Toledo on July 5 and 6. Delegates will convene July 5 at 3 p.m. for selection of a vice president and committee members, with permanent organization set for July 6 at 10 a.m. Governors and state officers to be nominated. Delegates total 723 with representation by 500 votes for Governor in 1886.

John Sherman’s Civil War service tied to 1888 Republican ticket

The B. and O. railroad introduces two new trains on the Walkerton to Chicago Junction line with improved accommodations. Eastbound departs Defiance at 11 33 a m and westbound at 3 28 pm. A revised time card also takes effect.

Defiance Noted As The Healthiest City In State

A report from the assessors of Defiance shows only 4 deaths in the year ending March 30. The city boasts an exceptionally low death rate and the Board of Health enforces strict cleanliness rules to prevent epidemics. Offal and rubbish disposal are heavily penalized to keep streets alleys cellars and sewers in healthy condition.

Weather Cancels Decoration Exercises At City Event

Due to rain the forenoon program was canceled and memorials were held at the Opera House. Rev Poucher gave an address as Harmonie Band provided music and the audience joined in flag ceremony, then marched to Monumental Park to lay flowers. Next Sunday a graveside decoration at city cemeteries is planned with Harmonie Cornet Band to assist.

Long leaf pine hailed as premier southern timber resource

The text outlines three Southern pines loblolly short leaf and long leaf yellow pine with the yellow pine praised as superior. It notes experiments showing the long leaf pine is 60 percent stronger than Norway pine and 89 percent stronger than Michigan white pine. Fifty Years After Squire Blackburn’s Service Ends

Thomas Blackburn of Massillon Stark county Ohio served as Justice of the Peace for Perry township from 1829 to November 2 1886. He is in his 84th year and his term closes unfinished. In 1833 he officiated James Bayliss and Miss Fox marriage with many friends as witnesses. In 1883 he joined about 10 or 12 others at the Golden Wedding of the same couple.

Serenade for Rev. John Poncher at Holgate Avenue

Rev. John Poncher was serenaded at the residence of T. R. Carroll on Holgate avenue by the Harmonie Band Monday evening. A few invited guests enjoyed excellent music and lemonade. Army stories were shared as the pleasant visit lasted an hour or two with Mr. Carroll and family.

Rail line plan shifts to cheaper route near Preston Run

Citizens at city hall discussed securing a railroad to Columbus. The right of way committee failed to report pending survey profiles. A cheaper line on Preston Run would exit near Wilhelm farm and run east of Frank and A. A. Aldrich farms then south, with expected easier right of way. Probate Court heard heirs of G D Ensign settlement. two minor children blocked agreement on a $25 000 estate. A western paper warns stores must advertise to sell. cities must similarly promote advantages. Highland township trustees invite sealed bids by June 25 1887 to build a frame Town Hall with separate bid details and bid guarantees.
