Drowning Narrowly Averted After Canal Rescue
A ten year old boy and companions playing near the Haller Gibson factory canal were saved when John Ayers drove by and leapt into the water. He pulled the boy from the canal bottom and revived him by clearing water from the lungs. The second paragraph contains an editor's hostile critique of a stingy town official, describing him as a nickel lover with a shriveled heart who preaches welfare but blocks city improvement.

College Opening Delights Nor mal College Audience
A Tuesday evening program at Nor mal College drew the largest crowd ever seen at the college building with over a hundred turned away. The Sixteenth Regiment Band opened the program followed by recitations, vocal solos, piano duets, and a vivid depiction of Parhassius. Professors VanTine Arbuckle Myers and Miss Bachman led performances to enthusiastic applause. Short addresses urged community support as Defiance and nearby areas benefitted from improved educational opportunities. The show closed with Arbuckle’s piano solo and the college's strong financial standing celebrated.
