The citizens of Defiance vow support for the Far Raguts boat club praising their Indianapolis performance as proof of ability to compete with mature clubs. They urge all classes to contribute to the club's ongoing success and extend civic goodwill.
In Indianapolis on the fourth, the Defiance Farragut Boat Club won the four oared race against St. Joe Boat Club of Fort Wayne for the Ohio Indiana championship and a large Silver Vase. Farraguts finished in 14 minutes 45 seconds after a 214 mile course. Prince won the single scull, repeating his title in the free-for-all. The team swept all prizes and earned high praise, with spectators urging them to stay over until Monday.
Anxious crowds gathered as Eureka Clothing House staged a July 4 pony drawing. Ten thousand tickets had been issued for one dollar purchases, with Minnie Minsel conducting the draw and Johnny Schauerman claiming the prize after his ticket matched 219.
Republicans of Farmer township held a July 2 meeting at Farmer Center to organize a Blaine and Logan club for the campaign. Officers elected include J W Berry president and Alex Mangle vice president, with C C Biglow as secretary and an executive committee named. The group pledged zeal and unity to support the Republican standard bearers.

The council adjourned after reports on Greenler street obstructions and drainage along Hopkins street. Sewer committee opposed a proposed East Defiance alley sewer and was given time to consult the city engineer. Bids for city hall and engine house ranged from 6 698.00 to 18 011.44, referred to the buildings committee for next meeting. The body plans to reconvene Friday evening, July 11, 1884.
