Masks in Demand Bring Old World Costumes to Balls
Masks remain a winter staple as clubs and Sunday schools host masquerades, sparking demand for inexpensive paper masks from Germany and France. Vendors note poor quality but high variety with caricature faces of famous rulers, actors, and notable figures, selling around 25 cents for a decent mask. The full-face versions require skilled molding and seam hiding, with manufacturers using photographs to reproduce likenesses for dealer orders.
