Philadelphia Clearing House to stop special gold deposits
The Philadelphia Clearing House Association on the 2d resolved that after January 1 banks will decline receiving gold coin as special deposits and treat them as lawful money. They will discontinue the special gold account, notify to discontinue on January 1, forbid special gold check exchanges, and will buy balances at the clearing house in gold coin or U S legal tender notes. In Springfield Massachusetts L J Powers, backed by Republicans and Democrats, was elected mayor on the 3d.
