On a transatlantic voyage Julius Hilder and Austin Drake evade a party to chase a Swiss pensioner, Miss Eaton. Julius, drawn by her mystery, muses on a life free of chattering dowagers as Miss Eaton secures a weather-side seat and quietly captivates with a candid grace.
On a voyage to New Orleans a clever, unnamed narrator or companion prompts Miss Elton to reveal two identities a Governor's niece and a music teacher. Julius Hilder admits love, but Miss Elton declines certainty until a later reunion ashore where her uncle Mr Smollett appears, sealing their match.
In Chicago, a man recalls a barbershop shave that triggered a chilling memory. He describes a former prisoner now released, who he fears encountered him again in the chair. The tale ends with the narrator choosing to shave himself to avoid the threat.
Washington correspondence recalls James G Blaine s 1876 nomination bid and the Mulligan letters scandal. The hearing exposed Warren Fisher and Mulligan with Blaine defending his possession of the letters and accusing the committee of violating private correspondence. Blaine read the letters in the House as supporters cheered, while investigators pressed for evidence and Caldwell dispatches.
Labor organizations charge Cleveland with vetoes and opposition to workers on issues from child labor reform to the five cent fare bill and mechanics lien law. They contrast his record with President Arthur's labor ally appointments and criticize his handling of New York railroad interests.
