Numerous notices from Hicksville recount a busy week. Local trades advertise furniture at Brown & Behne and Anchor mills in Maysville and Antwerp. People travel, injuries occur, church events are announced, and small-town updates include saloon break in, a man relocating, and a voter-aimed fair for Sunday School scholars.
An 1887 Defiance county page reports a North Defiance school offering diverse departments from Collegiate to Shorthand, opening August 30. It notes local visits, illnesses, new houses, fairs, G A R encampments, and community happenings across Mark Township and nearby towns.
William Jones rides in a top buggy. George Harr trains calves as boss boy. Charles Lindau has a large barn painted. Medicine peddlers are numerous. Robert Davis had hay burned. Miss May Dodd vacationing in Napoleon. Mrs Moats of Mud Creek visited Mr Schwartzel. William Bindorf and lady of Defiance visited the Ridge. Wallace Moats returned to the city after visiting. Mrs J D Dannenberg troubled with heart. A party at Jonah Graff’s home. Rev Dinkle preached first German Lutheran sermon from Michigan. Service planned every Sunday.
Weather cooler with light sprinkles noted in Defiance and nearby towns. Frances Schieb and others visit Brooksville and the burg for family and church events. Obsequies for Samuel C. Dey recounted with M E church services and Defiance Commandery honors.
Mrs. John Inoman remains sick. Rumors speak of a wedding soon nearby. Miss Anna Vandusan of Toledo visits her uncle Nathaniel Vandusan in Independence. Thomas Palmer of near Cecil stayed with his brother Samuel Palmer. Mrs. John Tuttle of Defiance visited her son-in-law and family. Born to Mr and Mrs Win Schmaltz a boy and to Mr and Mrs Dr R B Cameron a boy. Mrs. M E Irwin returns to Maumee City after three months with John Spangler. A Ayersville correspondent asked to be informed when corn is bought in Egypt. Died Aug. 1 1887 Mrs Meriah Shoup wife of the late John Shoup Horn born Jan 8 1826 aged 61 years 7 months 23 days after cancer. Funeral by Rev M C Howey at the M F E church on Wednesday. She leaves four children and many friends.
Advertises Acker's English Cure with claims to cure throat and chest troubles. Mentions prices 10 and 50 cents and seller N G Woodward. Warns about throat and lung ailments and croup or whooping cough in children.
Community update lists political cheer and a girl birth, work and travel notices, family visits, church events, school plans, weather remarks, and local misfortunes. Sam Miller opens a brick saloon as the town rebuilds after a large fire. G F Brenner rents Bloom & Son factory south of the B O to close out stock. The Sherwood Union 8 8 plans a picnic August 1 in Rook's Grove with invited schools. P O B of A Camp 60 will attend the West Unity picnic August 20.
Newark Arkansas resident C H Morris says he was told incurable after an abscess of lungs but improved after using Dr King s New Discovery for consumption and credits recovery to the medicine He notes third bottle and farm work now in view Decatur Olio resident Jesse Middlewart reports being saved from death by the remedy after doctors gave up The note mentions free sample bottles at Colby Scott s Drug Store
An 19th century retail salve promises to cure cuts bruises sores ulcers salt rheum fever sores chapped hands chilblains corns and skin eruptions with guaranteed satisfaction or money refunded priced at 25 cents per box sold by Calby and Scott.
B and O announces excursion rates for fairs and reunions. Notable events include West Virginia Society reunion at Wheeling August 23 to 26 with one fare round trip from Zanesville and intermediate stations. Ohio State Fair in Columbus August 29 to September 2. Fostoria fair August 30 to September 2 with one and a third fare from Deshler and Chicago Junction area. Defiance Sun Fair August 29 to September 5 with one and a third fare from Holgate and Hicksville. West Virginia State Fair in Wheeling September 5 to 9 with round trip from Zanesville. Hicksville Fair September 20 to 23 with one and a third fare between Denice and Garrett.
The advertisement claims Acker's Blood Elixir cures all impurities of the blood and is invaluable for serious conditions including syphilitic and mercurial diseases. It touts reliability for rheumatism and notes availability through N. G. Woodward.
Very warm weather and no rain are reported. L Trowbridge of Napoleon spoke on streets last Saturday. Joseph Weible of Florida Ohio visited town on business. Many young people attended a Presque Isle excursion Sunday. All Republicans in Defiance county urged to read the Express during Gov Foraker’s reelection campaign. Maria Shoup died August 1 1887 with funeral Wednesday at 2 pm in Independence led by Rev Howey.
