Fire Prevention Week Observed Since 1871 Chicago Fire Anniversary
Oct 9 15 marks Fire Prevention Week tracing to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Since Woodrow Wilson first national proclamation in 1920 the observance has grown with every president. Chicago fire toll 1871: 250 lives lost, 17 430 buildings destroyed, $168 million property loss. Annual fires kill about 32 people daily, over 10 000 yearly. about 3 500 victims are under 15. Fire costs reach $4.4 billion in property loss. total annual fire cost to economy about $12 billion. Prevention relies on adherence to practices and safer building and equipment designs.

Deer Park High to Offer PSAT NMSQT to Juniors
Sophomores juniors and some seniors at Deer Park High School may take the PSAT NMSQT on October 18 at both campuses. Co sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation the test gauges verbal and mathematical aptitude for college planning and scholarship eligibility.
