The Deer Park Board of Trustees learned wind damage from a recent storm tore fences near the south campus tennis courts, bent stadium lighting, and shattered a school pickup windshield. A new election date must be set under a Texas law, with August, January and another option under consideration.
Investigators from Shell and Deer Park research teams probe the May 10 explosion that killed a man and damaged facilities. No conclusions yet. area sealed for a week, now being cleaned. Spokesman Lafield says no dollar damage estimate or rebuilding date.
The Progress publishes a regraduation issue for Deer Park High School seniors who graduate May 27. It includes pictures of the Deer Park and La Porte High School senior classes and features stories on San Jacinto College, the University of Houston, and area college graduates.
The Deer faced Texas City in the third game of a three game series Tuesday night with results not available at press time. Monday’s decisive game featured winning pitcher David Biehl with six strikeouts and three hits. Cliff Griffin returned from a month-long hand injury to pitch three innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.
Police report Gregory Donald Hines of Houston was arrested May 13 at 624 Howard for a Tex as City warrant tied to attempted rape of a child. He was released to Texas City authorities. Also Kenneth McCord of Georgia was held May 11 at 7400 Stephanie for being away without leave and turned over to Naval authorities. Between May 10 and May 18 eleven people faced public intoxication charges, one disorderly conduct, and one criminal trespass. Stewardship Meeting Eastminster Presbyterian Church will meet in the Church Parlor from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 19 with all church members invited. Ladies Civic Club Deer Park will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 20 at Georgine Linberger’s home 908 Luella with a covered dish supper and officer elections for 1976-77.
The Deer Park Ram Kidettes Drill Team is still registering and invites interested participants. For information contact Mrs. Carolyn Bailey at 479 7332.
The Deer Park Public Library invites readers and writers to a 3:30 p.m. organizational meeting on Saturday May 22 for a Summer Theatre Workshop. Those interested should attend or contact the library and ask for Jane Ulrich.
Registration is underway at the Community Center for a summer program with classes movies skating day camp and more for all ages. Classes start June 7 and enrollment is limited. A Pasadena attorney Bryant Berry Jr introduces a new editorial column on the Progress opinion page called Your Legal Rights. The column will discuss actual court decisions and note how individuals increasingly learn their rights through legal cases.
Buchholz resigns from the Deer Park area board after nearly five years on the panel. The board will decide whether to fill the vacancy or leave it open until the next general election. Dr. Williams praised Buchholz and noted possible reorganization including promoting officers if a new president is named.
The tank truck that exploded on the Southwest Freeway was en route to Corpus Christi from the Tenneco plant on Hwy 225. The ammonia had been loaded at the plant and sold to PPG Industries. Reed said 10 to 20 trucks a day leave Tenneco loaded with ammonia.

Shell Oil plans a major shutdown of its OP2 olefins plant from May 18 to June as maintenance closes the facility. Gary Dillard says the outage, the third since 1970, will cause noticeable light and noise from the flare along the highway while safety systems are tested and operations paused.
H. M. Culpepper of Lincoln Street in Galveston remains in critical condition at John Sealy Hospital due to burns from a Shell explosion on May 10. Shell spokesman Bill Lafield said there was confusion over whether Culpepper needed blood donors and noted he is covered by a plan that covers all Shell employees for blood needs.
