Save On Sunday Long Distance Calls For Mother's Day

Don Carpenter of Southwestern Bell reports record long distance volumes expected on Mother's Day across five states. About 2.8 million calls anticipated, up 9 percent from 1975, with Texas peaking around 1.4 million. Direct-dialed calls before 5 p.m. are far cheaper than operator-assisted ones, such as a Houston to St Louis ten minute call at 1.46 dollars plus tax.

Shrimp Run At Cedar Bayou Pond Surges Into Trinity Bay

In 1971 predictions that Cedar Bayou plant cooling water would hurt Trinity Bay marine life proved false as large numbers of shrimp moved from the plant’s 2600 acre cooling pond into Trinity Bay. Dr. Frank Schlicht notes two peak periods after sunset and before sunrise with estimates of nearly 190000 pounds caught as the run ended by November 30. State wardens then began enforcing a night shrimping ban, curbing activity and shrinking fisher numbers.
