School Board Purchases Land for Future Sites

The school board bought over $136,500 in land at two locations for future schools. One site spans thirteen acres east of Luella in the Ben Taub Estate near an X Street extension.

Split Seam Ignites Tank Fire at Ethyl Corp Plant

A split seam on a storage tank caused a fire at Ethyl Corp Plant on South St. Friday evening. The hydrocarbon leaked after the seam split. plant workers were not nearby and no injuries occurred. Fire burned 4:40 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and was allowed to burn out. Cleanup and tank repair will take about 10 days.

Shell studies cancer link for 1200 workers in two units

Shell initiates a medical study of about 1200 past and present employees from the lubricant dewaxing and isopropanol manufacturing units to assess a possible connection to fourteen cancer cases. Eight dewaxing cases, five deaths 1958 to 1976. six isopropanol cases, three deaths. No current evidence of a workplace link. study by University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health with NIOSH review. Results in months, with steps if rates are higher.

Free Bicycle Giveaway Tied to Bicentennial Event

Registration is underway for a free bicycle to be awarded Friday July 2 at Allied Deer Park Bank as part of a Bicentennial salute. Donors include Kesterson Motor Co. Caffey's Superette and Deer Park Western Junction.

Medical Funding For Boy Raises Aid For John Wilson

A trust fund to cover John Wilson, a 10 year old mauled by a dog on June 5, will be raised citywide. The Give A Kid A Break campaign plans bake sales, garage sales, flea markets, a barbecue and a CB prize to cover medical bills and plastic surgery costs. Events run June 25-27 at local merchants, organized by Charlie Manning. CB radio tickets are sold, with proceeds to Allied Deer Park Bank and First National Bank of Deer Park to support the fund and potential future needs.

Board Sets January Date for Trustee Election

School board reshuffle sets January third Saturday, Jan. 15, for trustee election. Seats held by W D Athone and Jesse to be elected. Vacancy from Herb Buchholz resignation to be filled later, trustees favoring appointment or next election. Cathey re elected president with Campbell VP, Stanley secretary, Knowles assistant secretary.

Council Approves Traffic Study Hearing On Highway 225

City and state officials from Deer Park La Porte and Pasadena will join industry leaders and unions for a 9 a m July 1 Austin hearing to push completion of Highway 225 from the Deer Park overpass to Tidal Road amid peak hour congestion. A 7 p.m June 28 meeting precedes the hearing.

Tenneco PVC Permit Denied After Public Hearing

Based on the April 24 Deer Park hearing, Tenneco’s request to expand its polyvinyl chloride plant was denied. Hearing Examiner Jonathon Smith ruled the expansion could degrade air quality and hinder federal air standard attainment. The League of Women Voters opposed the permit, deeming health impact unproven, and Tenneco plans an appeal.
