School Board appoints Thiessen to fill vacancy
Bill Thiessen was named school trustee to replace Milton Stanley who resigned on August 23. The board voted to fill the vacancy until the January trustee election. Thiessen and his wife Myrna live in Deer They have four children aged 16 to 19.

Across Aug 18 through 24 Deer Park police arrested ten people for public intoxication one for a theft under five dollars three for failure to appear on warrants two for burglarizing a building and one Pasadena youth for passing marijuana in a related note Massachusetts Disposal Plant Viewed While in the North trying to sell bonds last week Mayor Bill Black and City Administrator John Sarris visited Massachusetts to inspect a gar bage disposal plant in Saugus Black praised the plant for burning garbage to generate steam for a nearby GE plant and diverting recyclable metals while generating road base material He cited EPA standards but said the approach is expensive for the city currently paying about three dollars per ton for landfill and about nine dollars per ton for burning garbage He noted future disposal methods may change as Pasadena expands its landfills amid permitting challenges from environmentalists and that Deer Park would require over two hundred thousand dollars to set up its own landfill Black argued against burying garbage citing it as a valuable resource and predicted a future where garbage is bid upon rather than discarded.

Maxwell Surprised On 80th Birthday
E M Maxwell celebrated his 80th birthday with a surprise party at the fire station on L Street. More than 200 friends and relatives attended, including granddaughter Pam Bowers. Maxwell, a Deer Park resident since 1968, said he was off to a football game when driven to the station.
