Harris County mayors including Bill Black will race at the Astro game this Sunday to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Drive. Also noted are civic events in Pasadena with ribbon cuttings and art shows, class enrollments, and local police activity reports.
Karen Cobb pursues the 1980 Olympics with hopes of competing for the United States Japan and Britain. She wins a $290 scholarship and will publish in Twirl Magazine and perform at the National Contest in Denver Colorado next year. She faced a travel scam for a Miami trip delaying plans and partially recovered funds. Karen has a rich history in tap ballet jazz and twirling and recently appeared in Houston Ballet's Nutcracker Ginger Child role. She aspires to be a professional singer and dancer with family support from Lake Palestine Texas.
In the 100 plus degree heat on Sunday August 8 Deer Park American Legion post 521 defeated Cleburne 10 to 7 to reach state playoffs. Duane Mayberry drove in a run with a first inning double and Pat Cook closed the fourth with key strikeouts and a combined effort from Riley Griffin and Menard preserved the victory.
Park High School hosts an annual signing party Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. on campus to distribute THE 1976 DEER yearbooks. Graduated seniors may add a $1 gold name on the front cover, yearbooks cost $15, and proceeds fund the senior class refreshments.
All Deer Park schools begin Monday August 16 with full day classes. First graders dismiss early until Sept 7 while elementary and junior high students are released 45 minutes early on Wednesdays for planning. Teachers will visit homes from Aug 16 to Sept 3.
The Progress notes new subscribers and residents including Larry P Taylor of Shannon Street and Gary Martin of Clare Street in Deer Park. Delwin Long and Wendell J Knox are proposed Rotary members. Sylvia and Henry announce a wedding. Billings and anniversaries listed with many names and minor details.
Deer Park faces ongoing garbage disposal challenges as no local dumps are available. The city uses Pasadena's dump, with bond funds stalled for a replacement. A private 20 year waste treatment plant could recycle metals and water, with limited odor noted by officials.
Houston police officer Rick Nichols played a real life role during filming of The Women in Houston. The crew, stars, and meals created a memorable experience as the film chronicles the Astros World Series era and many scenes were shot around the Astrodome. Nichols and his wife Claudia reside in Deer Park.
