National Library Week events invite readers to return overdue books without fines. A bonded social column notes various local happenings including birthdays and visits, with residents Glenn Bullock and Elaine Barnhart mentioned among community notices.
Senior Sammy Skinner, 18, star miler with the fastest state time this season, and Balor Moore, top high school southpaw, lead Deer Park High athletes set to graduate in May. Skinner’s mile record fell from 4 48 to 4 19 2, with state-aiming trials at Regional 3 Meet. Moore drew a four-year paid track scholarship offers from multiple universities and aims for the Olympics.
Registration and tryouts for teenage baseball are set for Saturday April 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Teenage Baseball Field with Deer Park Civic Center as rain site. Players must register to be drafted or placed in the pool. organizers seek one Colt and one Pony manager, contact Ray White or Bob Turner, opening day May 31.
Deer Park High won the District 23 4A track meet at Pasadena with 106 points, edging Pasadena 96. Eight Deer qualified for the Regional Meet at Butler Stadium after a strong night led by Sammy Skinner in the mile and solid performances across sprints and field events. Schools in the Deer Park ISD will be closed Monday, April 21 for San Jacinto Day.
A teen dance is planned at the Deer Park Civic Center on Saturday April 26 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Music will be provided by The Sabbath Wynd.
The Pee Wee Ladies Auxiliary will meet Tuesday April 22 at 7 30 p m in Civic Center Room 2 to elect new officers. All Pee Wee and T Ball mothers are urged to attend and assist in the election.
The Deer Park Civic Center will sponsor a yoga class from April 25 to May 23 on Fridays at 9 30 to 10 30 a m. Enrollment is five dollars with advance registration encouraged and a contact number 479 3002 for information.
Marine Lance Corporal Ronald N. Kelley the son of Mr and Mrs Stanley C Kelley Sr of 3001 Grant was promoted while serving with the 3rd Tank Battalion 3rd Marine Division in Viet Nam.
The Deer Park School District board approved 39 058 15 in furniture and equipment contracts for the new Deer Park Elementary School, bringing total awards to 93 270 77 with about 17 000 more to bid. Other actions included staff resignations and hires, a kindergarten fee increase to 12, enrollment at 6272, and a planned cornerstone ceremony by Deer Park Masonic Lodge on May 10.
The Deer Park Jaycee-Ettes marked their third birthday at a regular meeting hosted by Mrs. Eldon Sivley. Plans include revisions to the club constitution, election and installation of new officers in May, plus an Appreciation Dinner at the San Jacinto Inn. State Director Mrs. Jimmy Burke announced the State Convention will be in San Antonio May 8-10 and members work on a scrapbook for the convention.

Deer Park Public Library touts a new building and growing book collection while expanding services including a copying machine story hours and future audio visual materials.
