City sales tax begins Thursday in Deer Park
Deer Park merchants will begin collecting a one percent city sales tax that is expected to raise about 450,000 for the general fund. City Administrator John Sarris says funds are not yet earmarked. Mayor Bill Black supports the measure as fair to property and non property owners. Chamber President Joe Fields notes outside buyers will pay much of the tax and that merchants must collect it even if not remitted by some. The tax follows a October vote and matches state law delaying first-quarter collection. nearby cities La Porte Lomax and Pasadena show varied tax receipts.
