Hogging Down Corn for Pigs and Profits

Farmers are advised how to hog down corn using temporary woven wire fences and proper feeding. Details cover fence setup, gradual hog acclimation, expected gains, and the role of tankage, rape or rye, and alternative feeds. Field results from Ames show significant savings and gains, with guidance to study Town station bulletin No 143.

Lime not a fertilizer in soil sweetening claims

Agricultural expert M F Miller of Missouri Station explains lime is not a fertilizer. Lime corrects soil acidity to support bacteria in legumes like clover and alfalfa, with benefits gradual over seasons though large applications on very sour soils can yield immediate crop responses. Ground limestone is the common, cheapest form used.

Harvesting Roots for Winter Storage

Beets and carrots should be harvested before frost. Cut beet tops to within inches of the beet and handle carefully to avoid damage which spoils flavor. Store outside under protection from cold or move to cellar for severe winter. Pack in boxes with moist sand to prevent shriveling and corky texture.

Risks of Good Farming

The article cautions against overreliance on tillage as a soil stimulant, noting deep plowing and heavy tillage can exhaust nutrients and create acidity. It argues that while tillage boosts production, it must be balanced with manures or fertilizers to avoid depleting soil fertility over time.

Waterproofing Cement for Troughs and Foundations

The article explains adding mineral oil to cement to make waterproof concrete for troughs, cisterns, silos, basements and floors. It cites US Department of Agriculture guidance that about five percent oil strengthens waterproofing without reducing cement strength, with two and a half quarts per sack being typical. It describes a dry mix method: sand layer, cement, dry mix, then water to a mush, add oil, then wet gravel and mix. Also includes Doan’s kidney and skin products advertising, ending with a proverb.
