The old Cherokee fort near a brick yard in the southwest part of the city is proposed for preservation. It has historic importance in Cherokee development, but the structure is decaying. the plan is to buy it and move it to a park or other suitable city location.
County Superintendent H E Miller will deliver the Memorial Address and Dean Wm McVettie will preach at a union memorial service. Procession forms at 10 a m on Main Street with bands, veterans, relief corps, shops and civic groups, then proceeds to Baptist church for prayers, flag drill, solos, and address. Afterward Sons of Veterans will decorate graves. a second service with sermon by Dean McVettie is planned for May 27 at Grand Opera House with picnic dinner to follow.
National guard organizations will be called into federal service between July 15 and August 5. Governors are authorized to recruit to war strength. Assembly dates assign states to July 1, July 25, and August 5 mobilizations across many states with Indiana and California among the last. Formally incorporating the guard into U.S. armies will depend on provision of full war equipment and cantonment camp readiness.
President Wilson ordered an expeditionary force of about a division of regular troops to France under Major General John J. Pershing. Pershing and his staff will proceed to France as soon as practicable to command the unit.
