Decorah Chautauqua Opens Under Rainy Sky With War Theme
The Decorah Chautauqua opened to a damp afternoon but strong audience interest in a war themed program. Highlights included Walter Wilson and Strickland Gillilan, a harp trio, and the Overseas Military Quartette with authentic front line stories. Subsequent acts featured Dorothy Halstead, Lorenzo Zwicky, Belgian nurse Marie Van Gastel, and a lineup through Sunday with religious services and youth chautauqua leadership by Miss Marjory Palmeter.

Boys Help in Farm Work at Headington Farm Patch
Ed Sellman hired ten to twelve local boys for a day to hoe and weed a four to five acre corn patch flooded by wet conditions. The youths worked with hoes and hands, saved a fine corn stand, enjoyed a good dinner, and received spending money. Railway congestion reduces one element of pathos as trains fail to arrive.
