New Sugar Rations Limit Three Pounds Monthly Per Person

Washington announces July 1 start for sugar rations as the Food Administration tightens supplies. Household per capita sugar is set at three pounds monthly, with extra for food canning. Manufacturers face 50 to 75 percent cuts, with select products allowed full sugar. Additional restrictions target bars, sodas, ice cream, and many other lines. A certificate from the federal food administration will be required for all sugar using manufacturers.

Work or Fight Regulation Expands Draft Boards’ Reach

New work or fight rules issued by Provost Marshal General Crowder broaden draft board authority over occupations including sports and service roles. Plan for New Wheat Crop Distribution Outlined

Samuel Plant, chairman of the U S food administration millers division, explained to 140 millers from Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana at St Louis how the new wheat crop distribution will operate. The miller pays farmers the fixed government price for wheat, then earns 25 cents per bushel or 81.10 per barrel of flour after grinding. Freight and grinding costs set the maximum flour price.

Italy Wins Great Victory On Piave Front

Washington June 24 Official cables from Rome report Italy has captured 45,000 Austrian prisoners and gathered large stores of war materiel after driving Austrians across the Piave. Italian forces bombed across the stream as bridges fell under flood and heavy Austrian withdrawal continues along the Piave and Montego plateau to the Adriatic. Other fronts show German attacks on Bligny near Rheims repulsed and British units taking prisoners in France. Austrian claims of 40,000 prisoners are denied. Italian losses given as 40,000.
