Corn in silo saves $37 an acre
A digestible 37 percent of corn stover remains when ears are used. Silage preserves this value by packing the silo tightly. With 50 bushels per acre yield and grain value of $75, the stover is worth about $37.50. Silage minimizes dry-matter losses versus shock curing, improving feed conservation. Have you planned to fill that silo?
Look Out for Cornstalk Borer In New England Cornfields
Entomologists warn that the European cornstalk borer is spreading from eastern Massachusetts to neighboring areas. Farmers and gardeners must act quickly to eradicate or control the pest, which infests ears and stalks, with guidance from state colleges and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The worm bores at the joints, can inhabit multiple caterpillars per stalk, overwinters in pupal stages, and spring removal and burning of dry vegetation is advised to destroy the pest.
