An editorial review urges citizens to support war efforts through saving, buying war savings stamps, and maintaining loyalty. It rebukes disloyalty, praises soldiers and mothers, condemns German propaganda, and stresses the need for English language unity, discipline, and national resolve amid wartime strain.
President Wilson in a Mount Vernon address outlines four world peace terms. Eliminate arbitrary powers that threaten global peace, base settlements on genuine popular consent, require universal adherence to common law and honor, and create a peace organization to deter invasions and resolve disputes.
Cedar Rapids has been designated by the federal government as the wool concentration point for Iowa. All wool grown in the state must be shipped to the concentration point for inspection by federal inspectors and then forwarded to the government designated destinations. Farmers deal directly with the government's agent and are paid directly by the government.
Grant McPherrin, treasurer of the state YMCA committee, reports July 1 war fund totals at 1,280,223 with 1,167,572 for the general fund and 250,500 for the boys fund plus 62,150 from the state student department fund. One fourth of counties have paid 100 percent or more. 220,000 remains outstanding and is to be paid before August 1 as a follow up campaign.
Weeds should be cut before seeds mature to reduce germination and labor. Second Red Cross war fund campaign in Central Division Illinois Michigan Wisconsin Iowa Nebraska shows $22,182,317 raised, oversubscribed by 50 percent beyond $14,000,000 goal. National total now $1,870,038,000 with upward revisions expected.
Iowa's taxable property value rose to 1.0 billion dollars in 1918, up 25 million from 1917, with total state wealth estimated near 24 billion when adjusted to full value. Personal property surged to 232 million, horses numbered 1.20 million, cattle 3.28 million, and swine 5.40 million, with notable gains across moneys and credits and land values.
Buffalo July 4 reports that German soldiers who once lived in the United States are being sent to front lines in American uniforms. James Donahue, a Marine private and escapee from a German camp, claims many such soldiers spoke English fluently and even recognized Buffalo when questioned. He recounts capture after a Bowie knife blow, forced grave digging, taunts by officers, and a perilous escape aided by bread, water, and a Red Cross dog.
Reported attempt last Wednesday night to destroy a C. G. W. railway bridge north of Westgate. Track foreman observed men around the bridge and found timbers being bored to weaken the structure. Armed guards were placed around the bridge and a country-wide search began for the suspects.
Fred White, a Sabula area farmer, accidentally shot and killed his wife while leaving their home to join the fleet. The automatic shotgun in his possession discharged after catching on his shoulder, blasting the back of Mrs. White's head as she walked ahead, causing instant death.
Tony Kovichich entering an abandoned mine shaft in Appandose County is overcome by black damp. John Kamalarich, nearby, comes to aid and also succumbs. Rescue teams place the two bodies on a landing eight feet from the top until oxygen gear arrives. A improvised gas mask with an oxygen tank enables recovery of the remains.
Chairman Dent presented Baker prepared figures on fifteen months of war, noting 160 400 officers and 2 010 000 men with colors, up from 9 524 officers and 202 510 men. Airplane deliveries reached 286 by June 8, with production at eighty weekly. Liberty motors over 2000 delivered, Browning machine guns heavy and light totals for May 1918.
The call for volunteers to Mooseheart Illinois and Sioux City closed Monday with 103 and 180 volunteers respectively. County allotments list Allamakee 2, Clayton 5, Fayette 1, Howard 6, Winneshiek 1. Those selected will entrain July 16 for training in auto engineering, mechanics, carpentering, telegraphy, and wireless work. Vere McKinney enlisted though no county call was received and is to report to Austin Texas as an auto mechanic by July 25.
Potash, scarce for war needs, has been discovered in Goose lake in Keene county Iowa. The state owns Goose lake and expects a great mineral deposit. Mining will begin, serving patriotic purposes and providing potential profit for the state.
At Camp Dodge during May the Y M C A ran 1100 educational classes with 53148 attendees, 2 million musical and dramatic entertainments drawing 38671 men, 80 movie shows for 31130, and 343 religious meetings with 40968 attendees. Overall 278225 men used the buildings, 480000 letters were written, 6845 books circulated, and over 40000 in money orders sold. Four thousand sixty five men participated in Red Triangle athletic events.
A partial report details three months of operation at the Hostess House in Camp Dodge under Miss Adele Lyle. The cafeteria served 41 071 meals aiding soldiers and families. Emergency guest rooms housed 685 visiting women, with weddings and bereavements supported as chaplains requested. Children’s nursery and quiet rest areas, furnished by allied groups, complemented an information desk and writing station.
Lieutenant Lester W. Gorder writes from Camp Hancock Augusta Georgia about the large expansion plan for a machine gun training center with hopes for ninety to a hundred thousand men. He explains life in tents, hierarchy, duties, and social welcome in Georgia society, ending with a note of awaiting his next letter.
A Sac City man named Frite Richter narrowly escaped death when the Ruff building in Sioux City collapsed. He was half an hour late for dinner after leaving a meat market where several coworkers died in the disaster. He was returning when the structure fell.
The town of West Branch plans a large celebration in honor of Herbert Hoover, the national food administrator. An invitation has been extended and no date will be set until he responds.
