Ingenious Sundials in Paris Through the Ages
Parisians favored sundials, especially the Palais Royale noon dial, once surrounded by crowds. When the Duke of Orleans rebuilt the palace in 1782, a powder magazine exploded with sunlight to signal noon, soon replaced by a sun-fired cannon. Buffon later devised a botanical garden dial using a hair-bridged globe that fell onto a gong at noon.
