Getting Best of Mud in Western Iowa Fields
A Des Moines area farmer, William Gibson of Salix, invents a large wheel device to carry a binder through swampy lowlands. The eight foot diameter wheel with a 16 inch face and iron bands allows the binder to run on a plank road, enabling harvests where teams struggled. Initial costs run about $12.50 and the machine shows promise for boiler iron construction and riveted edges.
