Senate finance committee completes a tax measure to fund the war effort. The plan increases income and war profits taxes, raises wine and liquor duties, and adds a new 1 cent bank check tax. It also offers certain exemptions for soldiers abroad and parcel post shipments, with revised rates on individual incomes and a 35,000 exemption for war profits tax.
The United States customs houses moved more than 10 billion dollars worth of merchandise and precious metals in the fiscal year ended June 30. National City Bank of New York summarized the statistics and released them last week. The 1917 total was double the amount recorded in 1914 before the war.
