Dr. A. E. Kepford, state tuberculosis lecturer, spoke to the high school last Friday. He then conferred with Dr. A. J. SneWy about further instruction planned for the coming summer.
Adjutant General Guy E. Logan coordinates four Iowa National Guard regiments to Des Moines upon War Department order. Telegraphs will notify militia officers. about 3,000 may enlist, with typhoid inoculation three weeks before departure. Camp Dodge to be used for training. Spanish-American War sites unavailable due to development.
Clerks under Secretary of State W. B Allen prepare the primary ballot to certify 683 candidates by May 2. Parties on the state ticket include Republican Democratic Socialist and Prohibition has minor entries. Ida M Dowell the socialist candidate for secretary of state appears on the ballot. Ballot rotation will be used to balance first positions by county. Senator Joe Allen funds livestock feeding contests across eleven districts and plans prizes of 660 dollars for pig feeding in two classes. University of Iowa extension plans also include teaching courses for teachers and domestic science during the June 22 to July 31 summer session.
Governor Clarke proclaims Monday June 15 as good roads day in Iowa urging statewide road work and public support. The notice cites the public demand for better roads and asks residents to dedicate time to road improvement and dragging on that day.
Gen Funston arrives on the Atlantic coast with a brigade while 4000 troops reach the western coast of Mexico. Protection of Tampico oil wells may prompt further landings, a move seen as possibly provoking war. Huerta refuses to recognize demarcations while Latin American powers push for settlement and peace talks with Wilson.
Deposits in 1101 state and savings banks in Iowa on April 6 1914 totaled 323 350 500 dollars, up 6 725 861 since June 28, with 17 926 148 59 total gain in deposits excluding national banks. Officials note substantial improvement since 1913 declines, citing rising deposits credits and personal property as signs of broader prosperity.
War department estimates place the Huerta government armed forces at about 40,000, with concentrations in Mexico City 6,000 and Saltillo 6,000. Troops are spread across Sonora 2,500 Sinaloa 2,000 Jalisco 6,000 and other southern provinces. On the coast 4,100 in Vera Cruz and 2,500 in San Luis Potosi. Other strongholds include Nuevo Laredo 1,500 Puebla 1,000 and Morelos 860 with scattered units elsewhere.
