In Pratt City a quarrel between Alderman Mike Sullivan and Lem Thayer ended when Thayer, claiming nationality tensions, stabbed Sullivan to the heart in a Birmingham saloon. Sullivan died instantly. Thayer was taken to the county jail as crowds rioted. Also notes Huntsville's washboard plant addition and a sheriff appointment in Chilton County.
Jefferson county sanitary commission opened bids last week for fifteen miles of trunk sewers across the county. Lowest bids totaled 336 511 from three Birmingham firms in a tied pattern, prompting a committee review to ensure fair pricing and possible re-bidding. Also announced is the incorporation of Birmingham & Atlanta Air Line railway with a 100 000 capital, planning a line from Aberdeen Mississippi to Atlanta via Birmingham and Jefferson County.
Brewer Caterton and Brewer Caterton fought at a church gate near Florence last week after an accusation of lying to a young woman. Caterton stabbed him with a knife, killing him before fleeing and remaining at large. Authorities launched a manhunt for Caterton.
K B Autrey of Sheffield dies at 40 from peritonitis. A native Alabamian, he served as county superintendent of education for two years and was principal of Sheffield city schools for two terms before entering the grocery business four years ago.
The Baptists near Florence completed a new Union Grove Church after a long dispute over title to the old North Carolina Church property. A Chancery Court suit was settled out of court through mediation by Hon. John T. Ashcraft, allowing the Baptists to build and soon dedicate the church after decades of shared worship and strong sentiment.

The Supreme Court at Montgomery affirmed Anthony W Moseley v Ira F Collins et al from Madison Circuit Court. The case concerns the Tun tle y family in Tuntsville and a Christian church over membership after dismissal by part of the church board. The court ruled ecclesiastical matters fall to the church. Moseley’s mandamus was denied, and the Huntleys’ original suit remains pending.

State Superintendent John Abercrombie and other leaders attended the Florence meeting for the annual faculty election at State Normal College. All faculty were reelected except Mrs. C R Squire who was not an applicant. The college adds a new manual training department and a laboratory with $10,000 state funds. Commencement begins June 1 with large alumni attendance expected.
Dr W F E Proctor of Sheffield becomes president and Dr John T Cook of Florence re elected secretary. Miss Cora Collins of Athens earns a dentistry certificate as the second woman in Alabama to do so. Birmingham chosen for next meeting in May 1908. A naval regulation petition committee formed. Alabama credited as first to pass dentistry laws. Thompson Party visits Montgomery with Congressman Wiley hosting breakfast and tours including Jefferson Davis house and a plantation visit.
After a wind and rain storm in Birmingham last week George Swan, 11, died while Trenry Duncan, 12, and M S Cook, a groundskeeper, were injured when part of the grandstand at the baseball park collapsed as spectators hid under the smoker. The park fence suffered heavy damage, estimated over $1,000.
Representative Littlefield of the Thompson party says a trip exposed the South's growth, noting Georgia and Alabama cotton mills as evidence. He asserts Northern views are outdated and prejudicial, and he is studying the negro question but declined to share his positions.
