Hazel Morrow assistant cashier of State National Bank has registered to attend the 35th convention and annual meeting of the National Association of Bank Women to be held October 7 to 10 in Boston Massachusetts.
Morgan County sheriff reports five public drunkenness charges and single counts of peace proceedings violation of the prohibition law and driving while intoxicated. A joint meeting of Women’s Societies of the Church of God Baptists and Methodists is set for 7 tonight at Austinville Methodist Church.
In Manchester England the Church of Our Lady of Mercy and St. Thomas of Canterbury hosted a jazz infused service led by Rev A A Gower Jones with a trap drummer two guitarists a fiddle player and the organist. Rev Geoffrey Beaumont of London created the 20th century folk Mass blending Psalm 150 Gloria and the Creed with boogie woogie beats.
The U S Geological Survey begins an underground water resources survey in Morgan County with a three year plan costing about 72000 dollars. Chester Dodson will lead the study with Boyd Bailey as assistant and work will move to Decatur soon.
Senator Sparkman of Alabama urged President Eisenhower to withdraw federal troops from Little Rock to improve South race relations and reduce international confusion. He telegraphed from Singapore while on a Senate Foreign Relations mission, saying troops were sent before local officers could restore order after the President ordered a cease and desist.
Morgan County Superintendent Lester Wooten announced that September 1957 enrollment rose in several schools from the prior year. White student total reached 6 871, up 204, with 691 Negro pupils, up 26. Austinville led gains with 38 more students. other increases included Cotaco 592, Plainview 192, Moulton Heights 301, Ryan 227, Priceville 22, Union Hill 18, Falkville 11, and Hartselle Negro school up 32 to 285.
In Little Rock Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus said a special legislative session to address integration at Central High School is very likely. He called Eisenhower’s federal troop action 100 percent political and urged peaceful resolution via state action. Nine black students began the second week of integrated classes under paratrooper protection with minimal disturbance.
D L H Clemmons, chairman of Cullman Chamber industrial committee, convened a meeting at the county health office to discuss forming a county water board. Attendees included Cullman city officials, Arab and Blountsville officials, State Rep Bryce Davis and State Sen Harlen G Allen. About 35 attended as a mass meeting was planned for Oct 7 to gauge support for a one cent sales tax to fund the water board. Officials voiced harmony and no action was taken.
Two men armed with pistols robbed an A and P food store near Five Points South Birmingham about 9 am today escaping with about 1200 dollars. Store manager N Ed Lawrence said one suspect stood by the entrance while the other asked to see the manager.
Cranston shopkeeper Richard J. Cunningham called the President’s Newport meeting offer off after Hagerty said Cunningham talked too much. Cunningham denied being told to keep quiet and blamed Hagerty for the cancellation. The White House gave no confirmation of any planned meeting.
Police report a string of overnight thefts on U S Highway 31 S. Bowline Drive In Theater manager Carlton Mann lost 209 from a fishing tackle box and a cigarette machine was opened. Gulf Service Station owner Randall Johnson said about 250 was taken from a desk drawer. Ryan's Gift Shop reported two gazing globes and stands stolen for 12.
Chattanooga reports local segregation leaders plan to picket Sherman Adams as he speaks at a luncheon of Republican finance committeemen from 10 Southern states in Nashville. A top segregation official says Adams is blamed for the Little Rock crisis due to presidential consultation.
The Decatur area faces a growing threat to cotton as persistent rain keeps fields waterlogged. TVA readings show heavy totals through September and the Weather Bureau notes Birmingham's rainfall near 6.91 inches above normal. Local officials warn production per acre may drop to three quarters of a bale, with total output around 21 500 bales, down from last year. Sprouting bolls lower grade and seed value, while ginning slows 30 to 35 percent from typical years. See COTTON on Page 2.

Georgia Governor Marvin Griffin says he will not attend a Washington meeting with President Eisenhower. He, a Southern Governors Conference member, opposes discussing school integration beyond troop withdrawal, despite the group's push to focus on that issue.

New York Yankees manager Casey Stengel named Whitey Ford to start Game 1 of the World Series against Warren Spahn of the Braves at Yankee Stadium. Ford went 11–5 this season while Spahn posted 21–11. Spahn was announced by Braves manager Fred Haney yesterday.
Morgan County authorities arrest Arab man Robert Earl McCord 38 on kidnapping charges of Rose Myers 36 in the Lacey's Spring area. New evidence leads to belief she left voluntarily with another person, and McCord is released on 750 bond while the case heads to the next county grand jury.
California congressman John F. Shelley withdrew as a Teamsters presidency candidate to back a united front against James R. Hoffa. Hoffa led a field with Beck and others at the convention as Shelley urged a single anti Hoffa victor to repudiate the current leadership's stigma and defend labor unity. Beck praised delegates amid corruption charges framing the speakers.
Seven people died in Alabama traffic accidents over the weekend including a 70 year old Miami woman who died of shock. A drowning victim was Archie D. Walker 25 of Florence and an Alabama woman died in a bus wreck in North Georgia.
