FBI reports 14.4 rise in major crimes in first half 1956
The Department of Justice based on Uniform Crime Reports shows 1,291,120 major crimes January to June 1956, up 162,770 from 1955. Urban and rural areas both rise about 14 percent, with auto theft surging 22.3 percent and robbery dipping 1.1 percent.

Elderly Cedar Lake Man Struck on U S Highway 31
A 71 year old Cedar Lake man, Henry Thompson, was struck as he attempted to cross U S Highway 31 about 8 20 AM near Decatur. He remained unconscious at Decatur General Hospital. The driver was Melvin J Blackwood 43, Hartsville a Courtesy Motors salesman. Witnesses say Thompson began crossing from the west side after an apparent horn warning.

William Pearce Cox aged 45 of Cullman was released from Morgan County jail on a $2000 bond after being charged with first degree manslaughter in the death of Troy Leon Rodgers 34 of Vinemont. Rodgers was killed yesterday morning on U S Highway 31 at Lacon when Cox’s car struck him.

Cullman County records a 10th traffic death of the year as Annie Roberson Peterson 25 dies from head injuries after being thrown from a car in a collision with a truck on Cullman County Road 27 near Hanceville.
