American and South Vietnamese battlefield deaths dropped last week to the lowest level in six weeks amid a rise in enemy casualties by more than 200. The U S Command reported 135 Americans killed in action and 297 South Vietnamese deaths, the lightest toll since August.
A Birmingham hospital delay postponed a kidney transplant from father Logan L. Smith to Rayburn Smith of 1408 Phillips Ave SW Decatur. Rayburn, 28, remained in satisfactory condition using an artificial kidney while his father checked in for the planned operation.
Grand Ole Opry star Grandpa Jones spoke backstage at the Cullman County Fair about Hee Haw boosting real country music. He noted the show’s return plans in Nashville studios for the fall and winter production.
Pentagon sources say the Nixon administration will keep present U S combat forces in Europe and South Korea through mid-1971 with some trimming of support troops in Europe. About 320000 U S troops in Europe and 55000 in Korea will remain in place, with five divisions in West Germany and two in Korea. The decision follows a broad security policy review and a push toward ally self reliance amid tightening costs and force reductions.
Pfc. Johnny Robert Miller 21 native of Morgan County was killed in Vietnam combat Sept. 18 after two months in country. Services planned at Cedar Creek Cemetery at 2 30 p.m. Friday with Beechwood Baptist Church rites in Mt. Olive at 1 p.m. Survivors include parents a brother and a sister and grandparents.
President Nixon states that lasting peace in the Middle East requires both parties to be invested in maintaining it. Astronaut James A. McDivitt is named manager of the Apollo spacecraft program at Houston, succeeding a staff engineer on special assignment. Gunfire erupts as white construction workers picket a Labor Department hearing on alleged discrimination against Negro workers on government projects in Chicago.
A 67 year old dairy farm worker died in Cullman Hospital after a 1000 pound bull named Jack butted him in a pasture while they attempted to herd the animals for milking. Raymond J. Miller of Baileyton died from internal injuries sustained in the attack.
In New York, stocks declined in light trading. Commodities show mixed moves with cotton up, wheat and corn down on liquidation, oats down, soybeans higher, and hogs bid 25 to 50 cents lower with receipts around 4,500 at a top of 27.75. Slaughter steer inventories remain tight with not enough on hand to test the market.
The Senate approved McGovern backed food stamp expansion 54 to 40 and sent the measure to the House 78 to 14. It would authorize 1.25 billion this year 2 billion next year and 2.5 billion by 1972 making free stamps for families under 60 a month and easing eligibility with income under 1500 dollars a year. The plan also requires county level implementation and faces Poage Committee hostility in the House.
State Rep. Joe Money of Birmingham says he is contacting counties to gauge support for a potential run for lieutenant governor next year. The Jackson County former legislator noted a decision in weeks and would seek gubernatorial candidate backing if he runs. He backs highway development and supported Gov. Brewer's education package during the special session.
Mars mission Mariners 8 and 9 planned for May 1971 will map 70 percent of the Martian surface and locate unmanned landing sites for 1973. Two 2,200 pound probes will orbit at 1,000 to 27,000 miles with cameras showing objects the size of a football field. They aim to aid plans for potential manned exploration and Viking program data.
