A two part AP report shows how small cities face complex economic and social problems. Officials cite limited aid and burdensome federal rules as city halls fight unemployment aging populations and shrinking tax bases.
Mayor Bill Dukes says Decatur Electric is the only major utility in the state not allowing clients to join a federal fuel aid program. Only 16 clients meet guidelines and they must wait for October checks from Montgomery. The Morgan-Lawrence Community Action Committee notes other area suppliers have arranged access to aid. Decatur Electric requires 16 days past due before action.
Limestone County coroner reports sixteen year old Bradley Hudson of 1202 South Jefferson Street died from internal injuries after his compact car split in two when it struck a utility pole on the way home from church. The Athens Bible School student was among two people killed in area auto accidents this week. Page A-8.
On this date in 1973 Henry Kissinger was sworn in as Secretary of State becoming the first naturalized citizen to hold the office. The Decatur Junior Service League led by editors Mrs. William A. Sims and Mrs. John E. Wilks Jr. created Cotton Country Cooking, a skillet cake filled collection of about 1000 Southern recipes. Since its first print the book has sold 30,000 copies, with distribution across 15 states and beyond, supporting league projects.
