A Southern Bell spokesman says a few workers were suspended for violating the contract as they observed installers' picket lines. CWA spokesmen say most workers would return to work by tomorrow and a grievance would be filed if any loss of pay occurs.

Washington The Air Force announced a radar that can detect ballistic missiles 3,000 miles away and record trajectory speed and size. Gen. Thomas D. White, Air Force chief of staff, said it will be ready for operation in the near future in a major breakthrough toward a workable ICBM defense.
Four white men accused of anti-integration violence awaited grand jury action after their attorney rejected a light sentence. The suspects were arrested after Rev. F. L. Shuttlesworth was beaten during enrollment efforts for four Negro students at Phillips High School on Sept. 9. Bond was set at 300 dollars each for W. H. Cash I F Gouldin and J. E. Brackenridge until the grand jury acts on charges of assault with intent to murder.
U S Ambassador Max Waldo Bishop visited Marshal Sarit Thanarat in Bangkok amid speculation the trip signaled recognition of Thailand’s military junta that toppled Premier Phibunsongkhram. A spokesman said Bishop is accredited to King Phumipol and the meeting was not a recognition gesture.
In a Thomas Jefferson High School history room a 16 year old, Ozersky, was blinded in part by a beer bottle of lye hurled by Maurice Kessler, 17. Kessler faces arraignment on felonious assault as 18 others and a teacher suffered burns from the splatter.
In Little Rock Arkansas attorneys for Governor Orval Faubus abruptly left the injunction hearing after disputing U S District Court jurisdiction. Judge Ronald N Davies proceeded with witnesses as the government seeks a temporary and permanent injunction over National Guardsmen blocking integration at Central High School.
A package addressed to Ruth Petry exploded on a Ball State College office desk wounding Anita Reynolds seriously. The box contained a shotgun breech mechanism. Reynolds suffered severe buckshot wounds to her arm neck and face, with one finger torn. Petry and Linday Helvering were treated for shock.
In Texas and Colorado colleges the flu outbreak prompted hospital and campus responses. Texas A&M Hospital beds filled as about 450 Aggie students were ill with 250 admitted and 200 confined to dormitories. At the University of Colorado doctors staffed 24 hour duty in all dormitories as 600 students were reported ill.
