T H Jones senior operator at the Tennessee Valley Authority power house in Gunterville was found shot to death at his home. A Laurel Mississippi native Jones was described as an avid hunter and had been cleaning his gun for the hunting season. The report notes the incident occurred last night and credits Ken Reynolds with the quickies.
Gov Thomas E Dewey will open his bid for the Presidency with a September 20 address in Des Moines Iowa The speech at Drake Stadium will run from 9 to 930 P M EST and details of the program were not disclosed Dewey plans to depart Albany September 19 by train with Hagerty saying further itinerary information may follow
Congressman Bob Jones will spend three days conferring with constituents and open a temporary office in a post office civil service room on the second floor. He will greet friends there on September 13 14 and 15 and invites the public to discuss questions about the national congress.
Montgomery Alabama September 8 The State Aeronautics Commission will hold a special meeting later this month to consider transferring the lease on the former Courtland Army air base The present lease runs eight years more but the office says transition to Yancey Hughes Courtland and Robin Thomas Decatur would require no state funds and save about 25000 yearly by shifting operation and upkeep to the leaseholders Parts of the field could be used for farming as long as it does not interfere with airport operations.
The mandamus suit over Alabama school age law may wait four years without a judge to hear or dismiss it. Judge D L Rosenau filed the case in his court August 30 and recused himself to enable appointment of a special judge, not yet found. The action, brought for Jill Rosenau to gain school admission, proceeds as the county judge starts a new term in January.
Harold E. Stassen framed the GOP presidential bid as a response to President Truman. Dewey endorsed the plan and rejected fear tactics in Labor Day charges while Stassen spoke at a Republican rally.
In Athens the first woman lawyer to win a case in Limestone County court, Mrs. Tom Scott of Washington DC, represented the federal government in receivership proceedings for Automatic Gas Company Athens. The court awarded federal tax claims of 2031.35 and granted priority to state ad valorem claims of 269.30 while denying other state claims and most employee and creditor claims.
A morning hearing on unfair labor practices took place at city hall with Tennessee Valley Broadcasting Company and the AFL union in dispute. Trial examiner John Eaddy presided. Attorneys included S. A. Lynne for WMSL and John A. Thompson for the IBEW AFL, with Gilbert Cohen for the NLRB.
The Decatur city schools announce their faculties are complete for the new term. A 8 15 a m Thursday meeting at the junior high building precedes a tour of Decatur industries arranged by the Chamber of Commerce. New staff include W R Riley as Riverside principal and Jewett Filler as science teacher.
City Council weighs a riverfront acquisition plan after a TVA led three year study. A petition from 204 South Decatur residents asks action against the current city dump as plans for a new 40 acre dump site near Decatur are discussed with a tentative price of 100 per acre.
Mobile Senator Joseph N. Langan outlined a plan to let voters express choice between the national Democratic ticket and the States Rights party on the Alabama ballot. He urged Truman supporters to vote for Alabama Democratic electors and write in independents for the same group. McCorvey declined to comment on the proposal.
The nation faces a darker labor outlook as three major strikes continue and a CIO union sets September 17 as the date for a 25,000 telephone workers walkout. The strike targets Western Electric over wages with 2,300 Bell locations across 43 states affected. pay proposals range from eight to fifteen cents. A trucking strike in New York City and Northern New Jersey involves about 15,000 AFL workers.
Senator John Sparkman and Senator Lister Hill announced that the Department of Agriculture will add six clerks and several classers to the Montgomery office of production marketing administration to speed cotton classing. They urged sustained personnel to handle the rising cotton loan workload and farmer demands as Alabama faces a bumper crop.
Morgan County Education leaders announce Frank Grove Alabama Education Association secretary will headline the Morgan County Teachers Association meeting in Hartselle. The session starts at 2 p.m. at Morgan County High School with focus on reading improvement and professional growth.
About 60 people attended the opening of the Howard Eolian Extension School at Central Baptist Church Tuesday night. Largest classes were Alabama history led by Walter M. Jackson and music taught by W. R. Wallace. Rev. Jesse M. Rogers, a faculty member, said organizers were pleased with early progress.
The state liquor control board approved a new price list effective Oct. 1 The list adds Jardine Importers of New York as a new company handling more expensive Scotch brands in the distribution chain.
President Truman proclaimed September 18 as Air Force Day to honor the men and women who built American air power. The date marks the first anniversary of the creation of the independent Air Force, replacing the former August 1 observance.
Paris reports France plunging into another political crisis as the latest government resigns after only 64 hours. President Vincent Auriol seeks a new premier to lead the fifth cabinet since 1947, while strikes and inflation loom over the country amid a six vote assembly defeat. Edouard Herriot is named in dispatches as a related figure.

Western Berlin police were kidnapped today by Russian gunners and German police after they left city hall in the Soviet zone under a Russian safe passage guarantee. Col. Frank Howley protested to Maj. Gen. Kotikov, saying the Germans obey only Russian orders. Secretary Marshall denounced the attacks as attempts to disrupt Big Four talks. The Berlin city council condemned the kidnappings as a violation of humanity.
A Griffin Daily News report alleges last minute purges of black voters from 1800 in Spalding county with 98 names removed. A federal suit sought to stop purges while DeKalb county reported premature vote counting.
Montgomery report states trucks hauls logs steel or similar loads over 35 feet need special permits from the state Highway Department. Attorney General Albert Carmichael said semi trailers require permits when length exceeds 45 feet.
The Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce hosted an inter club gathering with Jaycee reps from Athens and Florence. State Jaycee officers Bill Leavell and Ted ii attended and showed a film about copper tubing operations noting the local installation is the largest and most modern of its kind in the war. Attendees from Athens included Earnest Beattie Melvin Hyatt Carlyle Cook Robert Cannon and Paul Gish Jr while Florence reps included George i h Johnson George Hester Tom Rogers Preston Reeder Frank Peterson and Otha Perritti. The meeting also introduced out of town guests by Charles H. Parker. A state Jaycee board of directors session is set for Birmingham September 11 12 with several Decatur Jaycees planning to attend.
Russian tommy gunners and Soviet sector police kidnapped 19 Western security police from a French convoy near Lustgarten just blocks from Berlin city hall in the Soviet zone. A German photographer was seized alongside the officers.
