City Decatur and Morgan County must take over hospital management via a three member non political board chosen by each entity. T J Cottingham named to the board by the city. Russian forces shattered the Axis supply network in the Donets basin in a 15 mile thrust, threatening Stalino as three railways into the city fell under Soviet control. More than 2,500 Germans were reported killed as wedges were driven into the German lines and a sweep freed 3,000 civilians from a camp near Bryansk. The push extended toward Konotop with encirclement suspected.
Alabama farmers to gather crops next week with aid from neighbors city dwellers state officials and even enemy aliens. Governor Chauncey Sparks says every farm worker is a soldier in this war as War Department releases 3000 war prisoners for Southeast Alabama peanut harvest and six tent camps are built to house them.
Decatur schools will open Monday with a full corps of teachers despite a shortage. City Superintendent S. E. Alverson announced an expected enrollment of about 3,600 pupils and morning registration to free teachers for afternoon organization meetings. Decatur’s 68 industrial plants reported annual payroll totaling $9,778,285.04 as of September 1 for 5,305 employees. Excludes military payrolls from nearby bases. inclusion could push the total well above the ten million mark. Weekly payroll across plants amounted to $189,667.02.

Captain Charlies F. Rowden aged 72 died at 3 p.m. Saturday at his Moulton Heights home. Born in Tennessee he moved to Decatur about 35 years ago and began his career during the old steamboat days on the Tennessee river. He retired about eight years ago and is survived by children and others.
