A Decatur merchants poll is taken today to decide fall hours for downtown stores. Sponsored by the Decatur Chamber of Commerce retail merchants division, the vote will set new opening and closing times if approved. Current hours run 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Thursday noon close and Saturday 6 p.m. close.
The Alabama roadway patrol reported 13 weekend fatalities including two young wives in a Panola Gainesville crash and a pedestrian hit near Elba. Others died in hunting and driving accidents across Coffee, Union Springs, Huntsville and surrounding areas as heavy traffic returns.
In Hamden Connecticut authorities remain optimistic about finding kidnapped Cynthia Ruotolo alive. State’s Attorney Abraham Ulman said after a police and FBI briefing that leads exist and the public can help with information. Officials believe the infant was taken not for ransom but by someone seeking a baby, six weeks after birth.
Tennessee River reading at Keller Memorial Bridge this morning was 18.90, up 20 feet in 24 hours, sea level reading 553.20. Yesterday’s high 89 and low 64, morning 8:30 79, 7:30 p.m. 85. Forecast partly cloudy and warm through today, tonight and Wednesday. highs near 89 today and 90 Wednesday, lows around 65.
The body of 6-year-old Sharon Janis Ivey was found in a basement apartment in Chicago. Police say she was chewed to death by rats while two sisters slept nearby. parents were away and neighbors cared for the children. Father Edward Ivey, 35, reportedly returned from Madison, Alabama with his two sons.
Rep. E C Gathings of Arkansas says he will launch an immediate investigation into charges that U S cotton prices are being held down by the GOP administration. The move follows telegrams from Sen John Sparkman Rep Bob Jones and Alabama Agriculture Commissioner A W Todd requesting facts.
Back-to-school week begins for Morgan County with Hartselle Elementary Morgan County High and Collins opening tomorrow. Austinville Flint Moulton Heights and Pleasant Hill start Thursday to makeup time lost during a two day teachers workshop on Sept 27 28. Other county schools began Aug 27 and will be out for cotton picking during the workshop.
The Associated Press reports 424 traffic deaths over the 78 hour Labor Day weekend with 88 drownings and 71 other fatalities. Safety officials credit late surge in caution and enforcement for saving at least 40 lives, while noting the toll remains high. Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota and See SLAUGHTER on Page 2.
Hartselle residents favor consolidating the Hartselle and Decatur telephone exchanges to remove toll charges between the towns. Rates will rise slightly to match Decatur subscribers. Southern Bell surveys subscribers by postcard. If approved, the change would not start until next year after Decatur dial system completion.
Nine of twelve Negro students attend Clinton High School while white pupils boycotted en masse amid a National Guard presence quelling a mob in Oliver Springs. U S Judge Taylor issues an injunction barring interference with peaceful integration. Attendance at Clinton is about 50 percent with many teachers present.
Flora Anderson 22, UC graduate, fell 1000 feet from a rented plane near Stinson Beach after she allegedly tried to escape the door as pilot Stanley Gordon 28 attempted to navigate. Gordon was questioned and released. The event occurred after they had planned a picnic spot on Mt Tamalpais.
About one third of Austinville voters cast ballots by late morning as town units consider joining Decatur. Box 12 reported 107 of 200. Box 23 had 28 of 116. Polls open 8 am to 6 pm with heavy turnout expected this afternoon. Returning officers are S F Roberts and Elmer Bussey.

Police fired on hunger marchers in Dacca East Pakistan as crowds surged from nearby villages demanding food. Unofficial reports say 5 killed and 20 wounded amid floods that worsened food shortages last year.
A two hour boardwalk parade opens the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City New Jersey starting the four day event. Thirty six bright floats and 2 bands lead the procession with fifty contestants expected to participate.
